Heya quick Q - have to get 4 new tyres for 17s, think the size is 225/45/17 and was quoted (each):

    Pirelli €125
    Goodyear €128

Is that decent and which brand do you think is best?

    Thanks in advance

Decent prices for the makes. Was getting my headlights aligned at the weekend and Advance said I needed 2 at the back. Cheap Chinese stuff from €150. Got 2 Dunlop SP Sport Maxx in the same size for €120 each in Waterford last week

Any thoughts on what make is best. The place i rang range from €75 for some chinese tyres and €125 for pirelli and goodyear

    What about michellin?

TBH I'm clueless - don't need anything extravagent just decent tyres. It's only a golf in fairness :D

    So goodyear>pirelli>michellin in general?

The Eagle F1 Asymmetric are one of the best of tyres you can get for the price IMO
    Camskill have them for €100
If you can get them for €125 in a local place you'd be doing well.
    Where you based btw? :)
I'm in the market for a set of them also....

buying a good set of Bridgestone, Toyo, Michelin or Goodyear could easily be the difference between life or death

any of those cheap chinese bands like Wanli Sunny or Nankang are deathtraps in the wet
and what's even more frightening, the types who buy the cheapest ones more then likely won't have a clue about correct tyre pressures either

So don't go along with the "ah sure til' be grand" attitude and buy an 'economy' set

Everyday at least once, I'll look out at the car next to me and see a flat spot on their tyres which are usually a budget brand too

I've a set of Toyo Proxes T1R on mine 205/40/17 - do a bit of searching and its a name you'll see recommended a lot

worked out at €72 each tyre after vat and delivery - compared to €120 each from hanover tyres here in cork

Personally I stick to the Jap companies like Bridgestone and Toyo
they've been developed to withstand Monsoon conditions in Japan and are well known for their grip in wet conditions

This is a pretty decent review on a lot of different brands

    http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=23&t=499931&mid=0&nmt=PH%20Tyre%20Review

a lot of mixed reviews for Pirelli

just bought last week 4 new tyres though previous were still OK but chinese stuff and I wanted to change it from safety.

Bridgestone ER300 €90 (Do gurads use these tyres:eek:. I was told so at garage) each with fitting. There is hell of difference in grip on wet roads. Would recommend.

Ill vouch for them.. quick delivery to a garage or your door too. Only thing to be wary of is a few places I went to to have the tires mounted said "we dont take kindly to internet tyres round here" and as such would not do it for me. I presume they werent happy about losing money on tyre sales. Backwards logic not making some money mounting them too though.

Scare tactics much? The cheaper brands can be ok you just need to know your limits or the speed limits for that matter. I found Nankangs fine in the wet as a stop gap until I could get the recommended Bridgestones for my car in the right size.
