Registrar unavailable for civil ceremony

We would like to get married in a civil ceremony at our venue, but unfortunately there is no registrar available as there is already an "outside" wedding booked for the local registry office that day!

Do any of you have any bright ideas? I would like to avoid getting married in the registry office if possible, and definitely don't want a catholic ceremony... Can anyone else marry us? Are there any other "registrars" out there? Perhaps from a non-religious group?

Thanks in advance for your ideas!

AFAIK, the bookings for the registrars who travel to different venues are centralised. We're getting married in Wicklow but the office there advised us to ring the Dublin office to book the date for the venue. We were led to believe that if the two times for that date is booked then you can't get married in any venue and a registry office is your only choice.

There may be a way around it but I'm not sure.

one alternative might be to get the legal side of things taken care of quietly on another date (in the registry office unfortunately) and then have a symbolic ceremony at the venue you choose on the day of your celebration/reception. The secondary advantage of this approach is that anyone can officiate at the symbolic service and you get to have the date you want.
