Rumour doing the rounds on Twitter than Johnny broke his hand yeterday... he was definitely cradling his hand towards the end of the game but nothing announced yet that I can see.

    Anyone got anything concrete?

Think he has a fracture in his hand and will be out for a month and misses the Heineken Cup.

Mate of mine just texted me: "Does ROG have an alibi?"

Not a great situation but I couldn't resist a giggle!

I hope Leinster give the likes of McKinley or Madigan a go in the Magners at least if true.

There is just no conceivable way they could be worse than Berne at 10.

McFadden coming in for his kicking wouldn't hurt either.

Neither are (even close to) ready for HEC rugby and the Llanelli match is two weeks away.

Leinster will decide between Nacewa and Berne (more than likely Berne) and stick with him for the two weeks for the sake of continuity, first against the Dragons and then the Scarlets.

Thank god we'll have Johnny back for the London Irish match in January... Im making the trip, can't wait to see him run rings around them Guinness Premiership fools

This is true actually. McFadden will probably have to play... I'm guessing O'Driscoll and the Irish lads will be rested against NGD anyway but we could well see McFadden in at 12 against Llanelli! That'd be nice to see, he certainly deserves a shot.

The Llanelli home and away game are going to make or break our HEC this year - and I can't see us winning over there with Berne at fly half. He's a decent enough 12, but he's been very poor at 10 anytime this year.

He is poor. But then he's the best we've got at the moment.

Well actually I'd definitely start Nacewa if I was given the choice, thought he was better during his stint at 10 than anything Berne has shown but I have a funny feeling everyone would disagree with that. Nacewa is a decent enough 10 in my eyes.

I would agree with you on starting Nacewa at 10 ahead of Berne or any of the young lads, think he would be the best bet to cover for a few weeks and Kearney can come back in at 15.

  • Fitz out as well.

This would put leinster backline as

    9 Reddan
    10 Nacewa
11 McFadden? (or potentially swap with D'Arcy)
    12 D'Arcy
    13 O'Driscoll
    14 Horgan/ D.Kearney?
    15 Kearney

    This is a problem alright!

If Sexton is in fact injured, i reckon it's more likely that Nacewa will move to the wing, with Kearney at FB, and Berne at OH.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 513 ✭✭✭gavkm27

in all fairness,Leinster have a big squad and alot of cover in the backline, even with Sexton and Fitz out for a while

I think this would be the "easiest" option, but I would prefer Nacewa start at 10 than Berne. Berne would be a huge step back for Leinster. I would actually prefer they started an academy player at 10 than Berne. Was quite enraged when I saw that he had been signed to be honest.

While we have good cover on the wing for Fitz(still have Horgan, Dempsey, Nacewa and Kearney as options for the Back 3), the same can't really be said for OH. Berne didn't really impress in his games at OH for Leinster this Season, and Nacewa wasn't great last year at stand off either.

Well you have a great kicker in McFadden,so i'm sure that will take pressure off whoever is 10

i'd have Nacewa or Dempsey ahead of Berne at 10. I'd say if we were looking to play a tight game over in wales we'd see Berne at 10.

They had this story on today fm sport this morning. Tough guy to play out the rest of the match with a fractured hand. Fair play to him.

This is going to have serious consequences for the HEC campaign though.

According to RTE, Sexton has 2 broken fingers:
Ireland outhalf Jonathan Sexton could be sidelined for up to a month after sustaining two broken fingers in Saturday's victory over South Africa at Croke Park.

Sexton will have a scan on the injured hand to determine the full extent of the injury but is likely to be ruled out of Leinster's two Heineken Cup games against the Scarlets in December.

Apparently hes having a scan. These autumn games really do some damage to teams with Heinekn ambitions.

As a Scarlet supporter we have lost 4 key players. Dafydd Jones, Mark Jones, Mathew Rees and probbaly Stoddart

I'd like to see the below backline if Sexton is out:

    09. Reddan
    10. Nacewa
    11. D'Arcy/Dempsey
    12. McFadden
    13. BOD
    14. Horgan
    15. Kearney

I think we might see some Irish guys rested this weekend (they can only play 6 out of 9 games isnt it?). Although maybe Kearney will have to play because of the injuries we have.

    Could be more like

    09. Reddan
    10. Nacewa
    11. D. Kearney
    12. Berne
    13. McFadden
    14. Horgan
    15. Dempsey/R. Kearney

That was in the lead-up to the AIs wasn't it? Anyway, with only one game before the HEC I imagine everyone will play against the Dragons.

couple a broken fingers, thats it

The rotation system works right through until the 2011 world cup. I thought it sounded like bubble-wrapping the players when I heard it but then again it worked for the South Africans.

But yeah, it would be good to have the team together before the Scarlets game too.

Fair play to Sexton. It just shows his determination to take his opportunity in making the 10 jersey his own and not to let that O'Gara fella back in.

Leinster will have to change their tactics now depending on who they play at out-half. I'd say they could play some lovely running rugby with Nacewa at 10, but I reckon Cheika will go with the more conservative Berne (a journey man but he can plug a hole).

I wish Sexton a speedy recovery

Berne is going to be picked, this is a complete disaster for Leinster. Can't see any of our other 10s taking us to an away win in the HEC. I've a feeling we're out.

Yeah it's pretty much a disaster. Berne will be picked for his kicking. Of all the players to lose....

It's a complete disaster, but lets not thow out the baby with the bathwater. Were playing the Scarlets not Stade Francais and they have also had a number of key injuries. Its a lot tougher now than it was pre Saturday but were not dead and buried yet.

The same Scarlets who managed to beat LI away, something we failed to do at home. Leinster need to win both these games to have any hope really, and I just don't see that happening with Berne at fly half.

Scarlets did well to nick that one by 2 points from a L'Irish team that underestimated them and that had put everything in to beating us the week before.

For me, even missing Shane, Luke and Johnny were still the better team. I wont put the mortgage on us winning both games, but I certainly wont write us off before we even take to the field.

If we finish second in our group, and we're not in the we could end up in the Quarter finals of the challenge cup, if we're not in the top two for points.

So we could actually end up winning the Heineken and Challenge cups in consecutive years. That'd be a first.

Missing Shane and Luke is one thing, but Sexton is actually the worst possible player we could be missing. I'd sooner want BOD missing from the team. It weakens us by a ridiculous amount.

Agreed, it's the disaster that's been waiting to happen since we failed to sign any serious cover.

Do you think Fitzgerland would be good enough to do the kicking? He's got quite a foot on him.

I totally agree that with the sh!te form shown by Berne at 10, that missing johnny is the worst case scenario and yes it does weaken us a huge amount, but I still say were the better team and we're not dead and buried yet.

In fairness to Berne, how many games has he had at outhalf for us? 2? Sometimes players can take time to bed in, I'm hoping he'll surprise us and put in a semi decent performance. If the pack is on song and Berne can give us 60% of what Johnny does then were in with a good shot.

This was a huge Gaffe by MC though - was always gonna happen, but at least its against Scarlies and not away to L'Irish.

Nacewa not in the squad for this weekend so we'll see where MC's thinking is regarding Outhalf while Sexton is injured

He hasn't been setting the world alight for Leinster A either.
