Yes, like all iPods, the Touch is locked to iTunes for file transfer and music purchasing. Although obviously if you have a collection of mp3s already you can just load these via iTunes also.
Personally, I think the Touch is a great little device. In fact I'm typing this on one; which is used at home more for quick internet access rather than for music.
Be warned though that it will make you really want an iPhone!

Tell me about it! I was so besotted with my iPod Touch I just bought an iPhone, despite promising I never would :o

But yeah, I'd definitely recommend the iPod Touch, it's fantastic. I've never had a Creative Zen, though, so I can't compare them - maybe someone else here can help on that front?

Get the touch. The 8gb one is 'cheap' and brilliant. My nokia is going in the bin and the iphone is on it's way. The current version of itunes with shared libraries between your home computers and being able to play music on up to 5 devices makes it way less restrictive. You'll probably end up yearning for a macbook too. With eirtext you can even text from your ipod touch. With headphones with a mic you can even make skype calls. All you need is to find your wifi hotspots when you're out and you will barely use your phone. A google mail account is useful to sync your contacts and calendar and even browse your photos if you have uploaded them via picasa. You can set your sky+ recordings, play games watch movies...
