    A sport?
    An art?
    a performance?
    a glorified soap opera?

while a glorified soap opera would be a fair description of the wwf in the late 90's you couldn't place that term upon a promotion like ring of honour.

what do you think it is?

    definition of sport:

Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

does that often open up wrestling to be a sport in the same way surfing or skateboarding is?

Well, I think it's a mix of an art and a soap opera. In a way, it's art (high-flying moves) and it's a soap-opera as well due to the storyline aspect as well as being pre-determined

The image of wrestling in peoples eyes is very negative due to drugs, awful storylines or the assumption of that it's for children

people say its for kids but its natural demographic is 18-34 year olds. also you couldnt say roh is a mix of soap opera as they rarely have storylines.

    Its Sports Entertainment.

The Sports element is the idea people are competing against each other to be a winner.

The entertainment is that each match up is set up to tell a story with a pre determined outcome.

did i say it was? what is it for you?

    I wasn't particularly addressing you.

Its choreographed entertainment with a pre-ordained outcome. Its not competitive in the sense that sport is, so its not a sport.

Wrestlings not competitive? Dumb thing to post.To reach the top of the profession you need to be highly skilled in many different aspects. How many guys have made it to the top and stayed there. Only a handful. Not competitive. Tell Triple H that.

Is that not why they call it sports entertainment.

The story is told through the medium of a sporting bout (Rules, a referree, a winner etc).

    *Sigh*

Its not competitive in the sense that other sports are. The results of the matches are pre-ordained.

It is competitive in the sense that wrestlers have to fight to get to the top, yes, obviously. But so is just about every other profession. The music industry is competitive. Theres competition amongst lawyers, electricians, politicians and just about every other job you can name. But no ones saying they're in sportsmen.

Also LOL at you of all people calling me dumb. Aren't you the fella who can't spell "moron?"

It's a big load of genres rolled into one, Sport Entertainment, Drama, There are comedic elements, Real life (Wrestling deaths,9/11) Performance Art,Athleticism.

So you could say Pro Wrestling is just what the "E" says it is,Sport Entertainment.

The natural demographic, if there is such a term, would be older than that based on the ages of current and previous fans

This thread will turn into a massive arguement the way it's going

    True,

    Its sports entertainment:D

Sorry I always had great fun with this topic as a kid and its still fun to do it now. Anytime I was told its not a sport i'd say, true, its sports entertainment.

Also this is boll*x. They mightn't have guys spraying milk on each other from tankers or the owner of the company getting murdered, but ROH, just like every pro wrestling company that ever existed in every country in the world is based on storylines.

Also good to see ya Fozzy, you've been quiet lately.:D

Pretty much this, its also quite funny how people including me sometimes can get so worked up over muscular men in spandex pretending to fight.

Its entertainment. Its a mixture of art and soap opera. Its not a sport. Though within the storylines it pretends to be a sport as its about athletes 'competing' to be world champion.

70% Soap Opera, 30% performance. Anyone who calls it an art is fooling themselves

It could be considered an art to perform a physical contest without hurting the other participant, Bret Hart whines on about this constantly in his book, being that he never hurt anyone and is clearly the greatest wrestler in the world ever (in his own mind)

Low Ki calls it his art.

But "art" is such a broad term you can fit almost anything into it.

art is anything you can get away with.

You could describe WWE or TNA as 70% soap opera, but not practically every other major promotion of the past or currently

And soap opera is an art in itself :pac: The same way that theatre is art
