Cork to Limerick

What would opinions be of extending the Tralee to Mallow Trains to serve Limerick City or indeed the Cork to Mallow (and occasionally Charleville)trains.

I'm not really au fait with the timetable or how much layover time might be available, but would either of these be workable or desirable?

Could they be inter-worked with the Waterford trains with trains splitting and joining at the Junction and at Mallow perhaps?

Is there any scope for reopening one or more stations between Charleville and The Junction, Killmallock or Croom maybe? Possibly by extending the shuttle services down as far as Charleville?

Is any of this sensible or pie in the sky?

See http://www.railusers.ie/forum/showthread.php?t=10916 including map. Commuter distribution is poorly aligned with the rail network

All Mallow-Tralee services (mostly 22000) are tied to Cork-Dublin services (mostly Mark 4, but some 22000 in the new timetable) and the few Dublin-Tralee services (mostly 22000) are tied to a Mallow-Cork service (mostly 2700/2800/29000), so there is a good three-ended service in operation, although perhaps it would be nice to have a few more Dublin-Tralee direct services.

There had been some Cobh-Mallow services, but these have stopped. However, there are some Mallow-Cork shuttles that meet Cork-Cobh/Midleton services - that a bunch of the Cork suburban stations (Ballynoe, Dunkettle, Kilbarry, Monard, Blarney*) haven't been built is a problem. There were a few Cork-Tralee services so that trains could be cycled for servicing at Cork. I'm not sure if they are in the new timetable.

Mallow-Tralee takes about 90 minutes, but that is improved with the 22000. They time these to arrive in Mallow in time for Cork-Dublin-Cork trains and depart when the Cork-Dublin-Cork trains have gone using the island platform at Mallow for ease of connection. Mallow-Cork takes something like 26 minutes, but on Dublin-Cork trains this is padded out to about 40 minutes to allow for delays en-route. Cork-Cobh trains alternate with Cork-Midleton trains for most of the day, which each journey taking about 25 minutes. This way Little island and Glounthaune have a fairly clockface timetable for most of the day.

Charleville stops have been decimated over the last few years and I think the Milstreet-Cork service in the morning has been discontinued. Some infill might look attractive, but are the numbers there? if there aren't there for Charleville, they aren't there for Croom

I don't think there is a huge demand for services from south Limerick to Cork**, but I think there would be demand for a Limerick-Cork services that gets in before the current 0953 (the 0700 from Dublin). It can be tied to the Thurles-Limerick morning service and other Munster services if possible and run all stops Limerick-Cork.

Other than that, I don't think there is much scope other than within 20-30km of Cork. connecting bus services can fill in the gaps.

** I think there is a Cork-Limerick service that gets in about 0830.
