Yes 17's will look ok on standard suspension,18's will look silly without lowering the car.

There are plenty of options available in 17 stick to OEM (original VW./audi) alloys for best results/quality,you can pick up second hand MK1 S3/TT wheels on ebay for decent money that will fit no bothers and really compliment the mk4 golf.

Once the are designed for a golf yes, with 17's arch rubbing isn't an issue, beware of ET (offset) though, the ideal offset for a mk4 is 35,this is how far the wheel sits out from the hub the lower the figure the more it will stick out,35-30 is ideal for a golf.

Even lowered 18's will look stupid on standard sided cars. Like putting clown shoes on a car. :)

Smaller than a SUV or 4x4.

So if a car is not an SUv or a 4x4 - 18" rims look stupid on it? Just so i'm clear on that.

Make sure before you buy a thing have the cars suspension fully and thourghly checked

I'd say your car has done around 50k+ miles?

you'll be going from 60mm on the 15's to 45mm or 40mm if you get 17 or 18 inch alloys,
the smaller sidewall is going absorb a lot less impact and will wear out your standard shocks a lot faster then if you stuck to 15's with a 60mm sidewall

My current car came with 17's fitted and even though it came with brand new shocks and lowering springs
one of the wheel bearings had to be replaced immediatly - I had the others checked and repacked out of precaution

I upgraded a good few other things at the time too as I converted to 300mm brake discs

Anywho, For the alloys check out TopGear.co.uk

they worked out the cheapest when buying a set of Wolfrace alloys for the last car,
you need to ring them though to get the best price and place an order
