Best F1 Race Of The Decade?

In a decade where a German called Herman Tilke made his mark on the sport with his modern circuts, what races do you think have been the most enjoyable and indeed involved the most racing in the past decade?

For me, it's Suzuka 2005. It was the race when Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikonnen put themselvs on the F1 map, and decisivly whipped the old master Michael Shumacher, both with stunning drives from the back of the grid. Raikonnen winning the race from 17th, Alonso 3rd from 16th, Alonso breezing past MS at 130r, safety cars, drive through penalties, Raikkonen passing Fisi on the last lap - it was basically a race with non-stop track action from lights to flag.

Honourable mentiones go to Hockenheim 2000, Spa 2000, Silverstone 2003, Interlargos 06, 07 and 08. The fact that I honestly cannot remember a 'classic' race at a Tilkedrome speaks volumes. I say, less Tilkedromes, more old school circuts.

    Sunday July 6, 2008. Silverstone.

A Masterclass of driving in wet weather.

From 4th on the grid to a supreme drive while almost everyone was spinning, sliding, pirouetting, general mayhem trying to follow.

    2007 European GP in Nurnberg

A red flag for torrential rain which turned Turn 1 into a pool, A load of cars aquaplaning off at turn 1, Winklehock leading the race in his first ever F1 race with Spyker, Hamilton's risk on dry tyres on a wet track, Alonso and Massa battling when the rain returned.

To me, it was a great race

Almost any Spa GP was amazing imho. Consistently the best F1 racing to be seen

With the OP on this one.

Suzuka in 2005 was like something out of a Hollywood movie. An amazing race that demonstrated Alonso's balls of steel. And I'm a Schumi fan.

I felt a bit sorry for Fisi to have led for practically the whole race then for Kimi to nail him on the last lap.

Alonso move sticks in the mind but the drive of the day belonged to Raikkonen.

Any wet race can be added to the list. A bit of rain usually adds entertainment to any circuit!

Bear in mind this was when Kimi was at the height of his powers and before he lost interest.

Best race I've seen in years.

    Spa 98...

It was the first race I watched and really just seen it as a who makes the biggest smash wins with my young age... Watched it again there about a year ago and it was class...

Suzuka 2005 was a stunning race, edged out by Spa 2000 though.. Even if the rest of the race was boring as hell, it deserves top honours for the Hakkinen VS Schumacher/Zonta overtake..

Suzuka '05 - for all the reasons above.

Brazil '06 - Schumacher's last race. Gave a true champion's drive, coming from near the back of the field to finish fourth. Showed his replacement a thing or two along the way :D

Brazil '08 - because the finish of this race is the most dramatic sporting moment that I've ever seen. Never before have I jumped up and down, almost tearing my hair out while watching formula 1!

Brazil 2008 is my favourite Formula 1 race ever-only due to the last few laps but what the hell.

Race wise though im biased-Anything Lewis wins normally goes down well in my book. Spa 2008 would be up there as well if it wasnt for Hamilton getting dq'd after so Ill say Japan 2000. Ferraris first win since Scheckter (spelling is all wrong) was pretty memorable.

Let's see that again, shall we?

Considering it's so hard to overtake in modern F1 cars, I would regard that as being the single most impressive manoeuvre of all time. I don't remember anything else from that race, but I do remember taping the highlights that night, just so that I could watch that move again and again.

Say what you like about Hamilton - the fact that he's just as likely to throw it in the wall as win the race makes him one of the most exciting drivers in years. He's like the bastard child of Michael Schumacher and Taki Inoue.

I'd love to be in Mika's brain for that one split second where he decided to flick the car to the right instead of follow Michael up the left side. What a move...

Hakkinen had about 4 inches between the tyre and the grass, very very few drivers could have pulled that off, Prost, Senna, Schumacher and maybe maybe Kimi in his day. Anyone else would have just baulked it and waited, or touched grass and gone flying into Zontas BAR...

    Ah your getting old :p

    so 09 - 10 = 99 and you pick a 98 race :D

I agree with Hakinnen's maneuver. I still get excited just watching that youtube video of it :D

    Brazil 08

I have never in my life been as tense watching a sporting event as I was that Sunday last year. I almost had to be put into intensive care after the race was over. It was insane. From the rain just before the race to Hamilton tip toeing around in the place that he needed to more rain just before the end.

I can't imagine there ever being a more tense end to a race ever again. Especially as it was the last race of the year with the championship being decided.

I just feel privileged that I got to experience the whole race start to finish.

I love this about Hamilton. Always on the edge, doesn't give up. He's a real racer.

Has to be Brazil 2008, fairly sure I broke my hand. :pac: Maybe it says more about me than about the race but I've never had such an adrenaline crash as after that race.

I was physically shaking after the race in Brazil last year. Amazing.

Ya I think Hamilton is fantastic. Best thing to happen to Formula 1 imo(Ive been watching since 91 when I was 6 btw,). What I love about him is the fact he is a real aggressive driver, always on the edge and as RayM said above as likely to put it in the wall as win. A real exciting breath of fresh air in F1.

    Poor Glock getting the blame.

I loved the last 4 laps of Spa 08 with kimi and lewis showing us why they are rated so highly, both of them WANTED the win so bad.

I would have loved to seen Michael attempt to get the 25 seconds he needed in Monaco before Juan punted him off the track.

Suzuka 2000, without a doubt. I have the last few laps on my iPod and every time I watch it and hear Murray Walker's "a bbrrriilllliant race by Michael Schumacher" as he's on the last corner I get chills. Both Schumacher and Hakkinen were absolutely brilliant that day, both proved they were true champions. A great end to the championship battle.
