Dell Laptop Monitor not working

I hooked up my dell laptop to my desktop monitor when my desktop was getting repaired. After a few days I switched back and disconnected the flat screen (when the laptop was off). When I restarted the laptop the laptop screen will not turn on. I know the computer is working fine because if I re-connect fit desktop monitor I can see windows started fine so I know its only a laptop issue.

Any idea on what settings I might have to change? I'm running WinXP

    Thanks

Have you tried booting up into safe mode and see will the monitor work then?
If it does go into the Contol Panel and see if you can change the display settings to a normal laptop set-up.

I can go into control panel when the desktop monitor is connected. When I start it without the external monitor connected I cannot see anything and nothing displays on the laptop screen so cannot get to starting the laptop in safe mode.

In the display options it has my default monitor as NVIDIA GeForce FX GO5650.
    Is that the laptop monitor?

Try pressing FN+f8 (on most dells) to switch between displaying on the laptop screen or an external one.
