No right turns on the canal grrrrrr

was heading from Rathmines to Clonskeagh, so figured I'd head down the canal and take a right somewhere around ranalagh. So much for using my "gut". All the lights had no right turn, eventually I went back over the bridge as Leeson St and did a u turn ( my hazy memory was that going out of town every alternate crossing had a left turn). Then I reckon I'll take a right turn at Donnybrook garage. Again no dice, have to go past UCD and up Fosters Avenue. I reckon the whole thing added about 3 or 4 km to the journey.

Now the question , do the restrictions work in a congested city, is any beneift partially undone by all the extra time people spend completing their trips. The Merrion Road is another example where I end up doing probably illegal U turns on Ailesbury road to get down to Sandymount

If drivers were more accommodating, these restrictions wouldn't exist. Instead, one car needs to turn right but no-one will let them cross so they block one side of the road completely.

They added a no-right-turn on the Malahide road and it cut 20-30 minutes off my commute so they're awkward but worth it.

Mount Pleasant Road has a right turn as does Sussex Road while there is a right turn onto a lane called Dartmouth Place under Charlemount LUAS stop. One of these will help you out but you may be blown out of it at rush hour

The idea of cutting out right turns at some spots is to ease traffic on the canal. The bridges you refer to are tight and any car taking illegal turns blocks it all up.

Yes, in the Case of Merrion Road, it means that both lanes are kept flowing instead of a queue to turn right.

I'll keep an eye out for that other turn at Donnybrook. 99% of the time I'd be coming up from Ailsesbury or Anglesea Road so I only ever use Beaver Row or Eglington Rd


As for Merrion Road, I'd normally be coming from Nutley Lane so it means going the wrong way and doubling back , I'd normally do a U turn on Ailesbury road. From memory I didnt think you can do a right turn on to Sandymount Avenue but again its longer

I'd have had to go onto the next set at Baggot st to get the next proper right turn. THREE sets of traffic lights to get a turn.
Leeson st kinda works as you can go back over the bridge and the turns allow you to double back

Take a right turn from Grove Park onto Rathmines Road and head straight up Rathmines Road, veer left at Boots and Tesco, then left onto Church Avenue (Oddly enough you will see a church here ), go straight through here, cross the LUAS tracks until you come to a T junction (Beechwood Road); you take the right here then immediate left and left again and you will be on Sandford Road at the church. It sounds a bit complex but it's a short and handy drive that cuts out Ranelagh village and leaves you well on the way to Clonskeagh.

If heading from Leeson Street, take the right turn at Madigans; this is Belmond Avenue and it leaves you at the crossroads at Milltown Road. It's narrow but it moves ok.

The one around Elm Park Victors link shows is a legit shortcut at rush hour and is worth a try. Sidney Parade is an illegal right as much for H+S as it is for traffic flow but in fairness, it's the one of just three right turns that has such a restriction.

I'll know for next time chances are though it will only happen again when he has his school fair next year and I'll make the same mistake again I normally go into Grove road from Rathmines road so out of habit I go back home via the canal , its a pig of a road as its narrow so I think most traffic comes in the Rathmines road way and exits on to the canal. The residents must love the music school.
