Nice! I got into using impulses last year. Takes a fair bit of work to get them sounding right but it's good. I just got that Recabinet pack now myself.... jaysus what a discount!

Great to see my setup work for someone else.
I'm surprised more people don't work this way tbh, particularly in the home recording world....

I'm so lost. Can someone give me a rough break down as to what this is about? Is it a sim pre-amp with a seperate cab sim? Or are you re-amping?

    I'll try and clarify:

Whether you're using a head or a combo, there's gonna be a speaker cable coming out of the power section of your valve amp, either hooking the speakers in your combo up, or hooking your cab up.

Unplug that, and plug the output from the amp into a THD Hotplate, or similar power attenuator, and then plug the speakers/cab into the Hotplate, and you've now got a volume knob for the signal going to the speakers, even if you've got the amp cranked. The Hotplate is tool for getting power-amp distortion at manageable volume.

If you then take and output from the Line Out of the Hotplate, and record that, you've got the sound of the amp before the signal hits speakers. You've intercepted it and re-routed it. The Hotplate has a LOAD setting which means that nothing gets sent to the speakers, so you're playing silently.

If you use a convolution plugin, like SIR, or Space Designer in Logic, you can load an impulse of a given cab to digitally model how the raw track would have sounded through that cab.

That's a very simplified version. It's a great technique in my experience.

Cheers. Don't have a loud amp so no need for an attenuator but will defo bear it in mind.

no you dont , but you may want to take a line feed from the amp and try this instead of micing up a cab .

my jaw is stillon the floor at the flexibility and quality this gives you at home - or anywhere for that matter.

You can use it on a track that was mic'd too. I've used them mainly with VST ampsims, like Nick Crow's Wagner sharp, 7170 & 8505 and also Poulin's SoloC. Get some very usable sounds with a bit of tweaking.

I plan on getting a Weber attenuator soon for recording with my Harmony tube amp at low levels. These will come in handy. Should be good hopefully! :)

I use pod farm with cab off then go into space designer with my orange cab impulse for guide tracks. Sounds really good. (recorded through BSS DI box)
I got recabinet because it was going cheap but much prefer my Orange API impulse. The RC ones are too smooth IMO whereas my Orange API was made with the amp loud and the API pushed so it has a much more forward mid range.
I find it is important to have a "nearly there" guide guitar track so you can see how the drums are going to sit in the mix.
    Note to anyone:
DON'T unplug your amp's speaker to do this. As the guys have already said you must use a load box.

Just to follow up on this...as Trackmix says, it's vital that you use a loadbox of some description. Running a valve-amp without a set of matched speakers, or a loadbox to replace them, will probably result in you blowing your power transformer.
If you don't understand what you need to do to use this technique, then don't use it.

Where did you get the orange one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 843 ✭✭✭trackmixstudio

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2133088/orange%20IRs.zip
Contains an API and Phoenix Audio DRS impulse for L/R.
Just drag into your convolution verb and set mix fully wet.

Cheers, I'll give it a go tonight! :)

    Just been thinking.
My Orange impulses were made by running through the 6L6 power amp of my Peavey 6505 so you could use the FX send of your amp with the master volume fully down negating the need for a hot plate.

I am not in the studio until this afternoon so I think I will make new impulses going through the Triple Rectifier in valve rectifier/spongy mode with post eq for hi and lo pass. Should sound really nice.
If I get a chance I could also make some with a Marshall 1960av and ENGL pro cab. Also with Marshall DSL100, 6505 and H&K Triamp II.

I will post them later on dropbox if I get a chance to make them.

You're a gent Mick, I know I'll definitely make great use out of them if you get round to making them...

It's great technology, pretty great sounding. Really handy if you've got guit pre's and want to make some decent quiet recordings. I've an Engl e530, Peavey rockmaster and hafler T-2 and they'll get ya about 90-95% of the way there tonewise with impulses. The Nick crow software pre are great too- I was playing live with those for a few months and they sounded savage through a real poweramp and cab
