    hi all,

booked a weekend away in a 5* in december in ireland & just got a call from the hotel saying that they are closing from dec 13 - 23 & would we like a new date?

can they do this at such short notice?

confirmed that a deposit had been taken via vissa card,

    They can unfortunately.

You could go and sue for specific performance, i.e. forcing the Hotel to allow you stay. That would be using a sledghammer to crack a nut though. Equally I have little doubt that the small print in your contract will have allowed them to change reservations like this. You'd have to show us their booking form to be sure though.

If you've incurred other costs connected with your stay which you now can't recover you can seek recovery from the hotel - probably a small claims court matter.

Bottom line - the most you are entitled to is almost certainly a refund plus possibly any other associated expenses that you are out of pocket for if a rescheduled stay is of no use to you.
