my daughter went backpacking abroad for 6 months. She is gone 2 months now and has just discovered the ..her v.h.i.multitrip insurance only covers her for 60 days.Is there anyone she can get insurance from while shes away or does she as we suspect have to come home to take out more insurance.

    Have you rang VHI?
My gut instinct would be that it shouldn't be a problem.
Loads of backpackers go for 3/6 months etc and then decide to stay on for longer for love/work reasons, and none of them that I know off have had to come home to extend their insurance.

I've googled 'extending multi-trip insurance' and it seems to be a standard enough thing to do. Obviously if you do this you'll have to examine the terms of the policies carefully to see that it covers what you need it to cover etc.

we have been on to v.h.i. all morning and they have explained to us that the additional cover has to be taken out before you leave the country so therefore your cover lapses after 60 days

This post on the Aussie/NewZealand forum was from someone who had an identical problem.
Might be of help (obviously only if she is in australia :)).

Maybe insure with another company for the remainder of her travels. You can do this easily over the internet. I used one of the links form the stickys above (useful travel links, i think) to price and buy suitable insurance.
It's odd that VHI don't allow you to extend it....

You can get travel insurance while abroad with worldnomads. They specialise in backpacker insurance - you can get insurance from wherever you are, for as long as you want, and extend it on the fly. You can even make claims online.

I had spent a year backpacking across South America in 2006 and used them, never had to claim but it was easy as hell to get insurance, even for Colombia etc
