I'm thinking of doing this the year after next, as a mature student, and i'm wondering does anybody know what the standard is like? Piano is my main instrument

Standard of the course or the standard you need to be to apply? I'm a 3rd on the bmus course and would know a good few people who have done the foundation course first, as a kind of stepping stone into the degree course. It's great to brush up your general music knowledge/abilities, especially if you're looking to study music at another stage.

What grade would you be on piano?

Cheers for the reply. The standard of both really, I'm mainly wondering if i could get in with another year of practice. Once i was in i would have interest to work hard and think i could make it through. I would love to go onto the degree after it. I haven't went for formal grading but i'm up on my theory and can play grade 5 pieces

Another 3rd year BMus (hi Carmel!) here, first-study piano. Another year of practice should be fine I'd imagine. I recall the head of keyboard once saying that you need about a minimum grade 6-8 to get onto the degree course (though most people would be higher than that, I suppose) and that it's ability and talent they look for and not necessarily achievements so far. So you'd probably be fine to get onto the foundation course. Maybe even audition for the degree as well if you can prepare a few pieces well. Good luck. :)
