I've been having issues with one of my molars for about 5 years now, have had it filled 5 years ago, had lots of sensitivity and dull pain for a few months so had it cleaned out, packed with clove oil and resealed about 5 months ago and now the corner of the tooth has just crumbled off when I was eating a banana of all things. I have a dull pain in my jaw which I'm worried is an infection, is it?

I'm studying in england at the moment and have no dentist over here, what I really want to know is it worth my while flying back a bit early for christmas to get this fixed, or should I try find a dentist here asap?

Oh, and if I had it removed, would it affect my tooth line? I wear retainers and would hate to see the work undone.

Sounds like you have a tooth with a very large filling. This means the tooth is structurally weak and that's why bits are breaking off. The health of the nerve may also be compromised. You may need a root canal treatment, your dentist will advise. Likewise a crown is probably advisable. Whether you fly back to your regular dentist who is familiar with the history of the tooth or seek someone in the UK is more a matter of convenience for yourself I think. There are plenty of good dentists in the UK but if you don't know any I would be inclined to steer you away from the NHS.

It's certainly worth fixing the tooth, esp now that you have had them all straightened.

Get it seen to ASAP. I almost lost two molars because of putting off getting root treatment. Eventually large lumps broke off and I had to get them done. I am now in the settling period before I get crowns fitted.
