I have an iMac 24"... I am feckin annoyed :mad:

I buy an iPhone, plug it into the iMac and iTunes needs updating, I update that, then another program needs updating, then it tells me I need the latest Safari to be able to use iTunes store, so I download that only it tells me I can't install it because I need the latest OS... and that is over 700mb download.... jeez.... the iPhone worked a treat on a vista laptop.

    What are apple playing at???

Start off at the beginning; what OS are you using?

If you want the updates then dont update but dont blame apple if your hardware is not supported

Thats what the updates are for.

imac 24" wasn't cheap, and getting an iphone by the same company, you would expect it to work straight away without having to download a mulitude of updates, the biggest one being the OS X update at over 700mb!

There are free updates all the way to 10.5.8 which include a number of security updates, you should have your machine set to auto-update to ensure that you are not vulnerable to attack, it doesn't take long to keep your machine up to date, and it's a lot better than having your DNS hijacked because you didn't apply a free patch.

You might have a legitimate complaint if these updates weren't free.

10.5.2? have you ever applied an update to your machine? updates are part of the life of all electronic devices these days. many people don't realize even their phone needs updating. apple has put together a great package with iphone, itunes, mac osx and the imac, don't bash it because you ignored the warnings to update your machine. as for vista never having an update where have you been? the OS is always patching security flaws.

never needed to the iMac 24" is used for music only (logic), until now, when I wanted to put some of the tracks I had done from the iMac to the iPhone, it would not do it until the updates had been done.

All I am saying is I went through alot of downloading updates for this and that, multiple reboots, all this so I can use the iPhone with iTunes on the iMac.

as for Vista, I was just saying how the iphone worked straight away..... Vista sucks big time

Software Update will download and install all your updates automatically, and you only need to reboot once. I really don't see the issue.

Damn apple for being on top of things!

Most of us are glad for updates that add new features and increase the reliability of our machines. Its hardly that big of a deal.

For Vista you had to download new versions of iTunes and Quicktime.

Are you saying you don't do the updates on Vista either?

If that is the case i asume you don't mind probably losing any passwords you have on your computer, maybe have someone spying on your banking or using your computer to send spam!

I fail to see how it can do auto updates if the iMac was not connected to the internet for over a year!!!!!!

Microsoft updates are once a month on the first tuesday.

Over the last two years there have been more Apple updates that Microsoft updates and the Apple updates tend to be much bigger too.

I look after 100 XP machines and 120 Mac's and the updates on Mac's are always a bigger job.

    hi

i dont get the issue with the updates, is you do them as they are released it obviously much quicker than all in one go.

for what its worth if i have to update any large files like a 400mb os update i start it and head off to bed, then when i get up in the morning i just type in my password and its finished,

I have a windows machine (sh!t)... all I am saying is that, the iMac was not connected to the web as it was just used for music production, so it has never been updated,.... and I found it frustrating that I had to complete so many updates SIMPLY TO BE ABLE TO ADD MY TRACKS IN MP3 TO MY IPHONE......

Quite a little rant you had. :D

I'll let you in on a little known secret - hardware isn't sentient. Computers and Gadgets are stupid, people are supposed to provide the intelligence.

OS X 10.5.2 was made available on the Apple website on February 11, 2008 - approximately 93 weeks ago. In terms of technology that is quite a long time, I'll give you a few examples of relevant Apple milestones since then:
    • July 2008 - iPhone 3G released.
    • September 2008 - iTunes 8.0 released, QuickTime 7.5.5 released.
    • June 2009 - iPhone 3GS released, Safari 4.0.x released, iPhone OS 3.0 released.
    • September 2009 - iTunes 9.0 released, QuickTime 7.6.4 released.
Those that pay attention know that when the iPod or iPhone product line gets updated so does iTunes. In June 2007, syncing a new iPhone required an upgrade to iTunes 7.3. iTunes 7.7 was released to add support for the iPhone 3G, and 8.2 added support for the iPhone 3GS - without the required update, the software wouldn't recognise the device. QuickTime media player software updates are required because iTunes is essentially a front end for the QuickTime media player.

Safari is the native web browser on OS X and iPhone OS. Because the operating system on your iMac came with Safari 3.0.x or 3.1 installed it didn't have any of the security fixes from later releases. On Apple systems (iPhone and iMac in your case), iTunes uses the Safari browser engine to access the iTunes store. To limit exposure to security issues, Apple forces their own browser engine to meet a minimum level of compliance when accessing the iTunes store - 3.0/3.1 are well below that level. 4.0.1 was released in June 2009 about a week before the iPhone 3GS.

If you thought about it you would see that there is some intelligence behind the "multitude of updates" process:
    1. The iPhone software requires a minimum version of iTunes to be installed on the system it is connected to.
    2. iTunes is dependant on the QuickTime media player engine.
    3. iTunes is integrated into the Safari engine on OS X to access the iTunes store.
    4. The iTunes store requires a minimum web browser build.
    5. The web browser requires a minimum operating system build.
The additional steps 3-5 were required because you switched to an Apple system. Deciding out of the blue to use the iMac for the purpose of "SIMPLY TO BE ABLE TO ADD MY TRACKS IN MP3 TO MY IPHONE" and not expecting to have to update any software which you had previously neglected was more than a little silly.
