Ebay - Registered post or not?

    Hi,

I sold a book on ebay for €35 and am sending it to Britain. This is my first time selling on ebay and just wanted to ask should I register the item for post? The buyer seems to have plenty of postive feedback. My Paypal account has received payment but funds are locked for moment.

Can you tell me how it all works? Do I send item, buyer confirms and funds are released?

    Thanks in advance!
    Any advice appreciated!

    Yours,
    First time ebayer!

When you say that they're locked, does that mean you received an echeque? If so, you should wait until the echeque clears because just like a normal cheque, it could bounce.

Sending by registered post is a good idea because if the buyer doesn't receive the item, they can file a dispute and you need to prove that the buyer received the item.

Sorry, they're not locked. Just looked in my account and it says the funds are under 'pending' and aren't in the 'available' column...

"Payment Holds are funds that we set aside in case you receive any payment reversals. We want to make sure your customers are satisfied and we aren't exposed to risky transactions. When we decide to apply a hold, we look a variety of factors including transaction activity, type of business, past customer disputes, and overall customer satisfaction."

So, is it for the buyer to confirm delivery and subsequently I receive payment???

I think the hold is automatically lifted after a certain period.

If you don't use registered post, then the buyer could claim non-receipt (whether they get it or not) and you will lose. What postal options did you have in the auction? Did it mention registered post at all? If you did, then you better use it. If not, it's up to you, but bare in mind the consequences if the buyer starts a claim.

Always send it registered unless it has little value.
You haven't a leg to stand on if the buyer makes a claim of non-delivery.

Oh right, I just remembered that most "new" sellers have a hold placed on payments they receive. I believe it stays for 21 days or when the buyer leaves positive feedback (whichever comes first). If that was the case with my PP account, I'd definitely send the item by registered post.

You should always specify postal options when listing an item on eBay and for valuable items specify that post will be by registered mail only. :)
