What happens when you let the laptop load normally and don't bring the F8 menu up? Does it just keep looping?

it goes to the blue windows problem screen and says the error is unmountable boot volume

Sounds like a hard drive problem. Do you have any option in the bios to run diagnostics on it?

Sounds to me like a particular file problem rather than the hard drive itself. Is it XP ? Do you have an XP CD ? try booting the CD (might need to enable in BIOS) and doing a repair

Slap in yer XP CD, restart, pres any key to start it, and let it load.

    Go to recovery console.

Type in fixboot, then yes (Optional but no harm)

Then type in chkdsk /r and let it perform it's scan (It may take a while)

Hopefully that should fix what ailes ya.

If not you can try a repair install of Windows (Option only appears if your using XP Professional) It'll reinstall Windows without deleting your files.

Have you tried screaming at it?
