maternity leave tax back

    still suffering from baby brain so need help. am just back to work from maternity leave. finished work in march so i'm wondering am i due tax back. i rang tax office, not very helpful. they seemed to think i'd receive tax back from my employer. i just presumed that the tax office would send me a cheque. what do i do now??

    As you were out of work during the period Mar-Nov you may not have received the full benefit of your monthly tax credits for this period.

    If, however, you were still in receipt of your normal salary during this period (regardless of whether it was made up of social welfare payments or not) your monthly tax credits would have been used up as normal and you would not be due any refund.

    If you were not receiving your normal salary you may have excess tax credits available to you. If this is the case your employer may give you the benefit of these excess credits through the payroll between now and the end of the year.

    Either way, once January or early February comes around I would call Revenue and request a P21 Balancing Statement. This will reconcile your PAYE tax position for the year and calculate any refund due to you, or similarly, any amount payable by you ; )
