    Hello,

If my brother-in-law from New York sends some music equipment home (reel to reel tape machine from the late 70's) to his family address in Ireland (has not lived there for 20 years), does he have to pay import vat/charges!

What ways are there to get customs to understand that this is his own personal item!

    Cheers!

    Bob!

Everything you buy or own is your own personal item, but that doesn't exempt it from duty/VAT. He should get it valued, and expect to pay VAT and duty on this valuation.

so, when he moves back to Ireland, with all his life long possesions, he must pay the vat/duty on them all?

I can't believe that, thats the way it works, it seems a little strange!

Is their an exception rule for ex-pats?

    Edit:

"If you are moving permanently to Ireland from abroad you will not have to pay Duty on any imported personal used goods. However used goods must be more than six months old and receipts are usually requested. All goods should arrive in Ireland within 12 months of your moving back permanently."

Ah yes, I forgot about that exception. By six month old, they may actually mean that he has to have owned it for more than 6 months too. In the case of the tape machine from 30 years ago, it's obviously more than 6 months old, but if he only bought it yesterday, I'm not sure he'd get away with it.
