Image manipulation noob

I want to take two snapshots from an avi movie file with VLC media player. I need to put them onto a black background one underneath the other with some space in between them. I also need to insert some text into that space. Can someone tell me how to do this? What program can let me do this? Something free and small would be great as I don't want to download something like photoshop for such a menial task. I'm asking as I have zero experience with stuff like this. Thanks

There's a program called the GIMP that's pretty much the same as photoshop but is free.

It's also quite easy to use.

Think I got it sorted. Downloaded IrfanView. "Create Panorama" allows me to put one image under the other. Adding the text is a little cumbersome though.

Array your images in layers on a back base layer and add type.
