I'm not entirely sure why you have to apply for acces Tom, I fairly sure its not due to any inflated sense of importance they have. The link above will give ya the necessary details. For whats it's worth I don't bother post on the soccer threads anymore, they are full of undesireables who think their opinions are exclusively correct. Threads go off topic too quickly and there's always someone out to prove they are smarter and know more about the game than you do. My advice steer clear.

Maybe that is why you have to apply and agree to some rules they have to get in.

The soccer forum got shut down before due to people not being able to behave themselves and when they got banned they would just re-register and start all over again

The current system is in place to get around that, it isn't ideal but it makes it too much effort for banned user to try and get back in, they have to sit out their ban instead

A lot of threads can descend into Liverpool-man U bashing but there are also a lot of interesting topics in there too

And if new people sign up and contribute then that helps everyone

Maybe its time so to close it down again. To me, boards.ie is a public forum and everyone should have access to all sections. The soccer section may not be the only one that has restricted access. To be honest lots of sections are of little interest to me and i dont go into them. Whatever goes on in their cant be as bad as goes on in other sections, where some people get very graphic and personal.

The restricted access isn't really about the content of the soccer forum as it is viewable by all, it is more about the managability of it

It was impossible to keep control opf the forum and stop it descending into chaos which made it useless to anyone

Minor inconvienence aside the current system works well in keeping the place in check, the access system is fairly hassle free and once you have access then you can post away to your hearts content

The access system shouldn't be needed if people could behave themselves but as they can't it is there, why deny the people who are civil a place to discuss soccer just because others lack the capacity for rational discussion

With that in mind can I ask what your objection to the access system is, would you prefer to shut forums down rather than put a system in place that allows them to live? In theory the site shouldn't need moderators either but that doesn't work very well
This thread is really more suited to the feedback forum at this stage

Having to get 50 posts to post on the soccer forum cuts out a lot of the "MANU4EVA" threads and "MANU SUK" threads, it also cuts down on the posters that would post this stuff.

Unfortunately it only cuts it down, and doesn't get rid of it

Can I take it that you are able to post on the Soccer threads.

I still feel that everyone should be able to say what they want where they want and when they want. However if you are causing trouble on there, then the moderators can fan those people. I dont understand the workings of a computer, but am lead to believe that there is some IP number on every computer, which helps identify who is who, or atleast what computer things come from. If this is correct i am sure that it is possible to ban all use from that computer very quickly.

Where must you have 50 posts. I have nearly 600 and cant get in there. Maybe you need them in certain sections. It cant be in the soccer section anyway, because I and I am sure many others cant get in to even leave one let alone 50.

I meant you have to get 50 posts in any other forum, before you can ask for access. As The Recliner stated above, it is to cut out the childish crap that you get when you talk football with people.

Out of interest, why cant you access the soccer forum?

Boards.ie is a privately owned site. There is no free speech here. You agreed to that when you signed up.

As others said, use the Soccer Access Request forum to be able to post in the Soccer forum.
