So I found this USB key...

I found a USB key in the Hamilton Mac rooms (Not the basement one, the smaller ground level one). It's blue-green in colour and 2GB in memory.

It contains a film in MKV file format called "Zack and Miri Make a Porno". I was dissappointed to find that it was only a shítty comedy film and not a dirty x-rated **** worthy production. Hence I don't want the USB key anymore.

So here's the deal: Own up to having this embarrassing film on your USB key and I'll hand it into the hamilton security desk for you to collect. No PM's; you must own up in this thread so everyone can laugh at you. Also to prove it's yours, you must state what course you're doing and what year. There is a lot of course related material saved on the USB key so I know.

Pic related: it's the USB key

MKV? If it was AVI I'd say it was mine. Maybe take down the photo or what's on it if you think the genuine owner might happen here.

That's what I was wondering, a DVD is 4.7GB, how would an MKV fit on a 2GB memory stick? Unless it's only part of the film?

Really? MKV is just a container format, usually using the same codec and AVIs, film rips tend to be either 700 or 1400MB.

Well MKV is usually smaller isn't it? AVI is usually 700MB per film, and most MKV films i've come across on the net are about 300mb or thereabouts (not HD obviously, but not bad quality either).

For films I've never seen a 300MB file that was watchable. It's all about the codec used, MKV or AVI is basically irrelevant to the size/quality.

    - TCD has about 15,000 registered students.
    - There are 24 people using the forum as I write. Let's be generous and assume the total daily audience is ten times that figure, i.e. 240, and that this is the same cohort of people. Let's really simplify and assume that almost all those people are registered students (even though I'm not).
    - Therefore, the probability that the student who owns the USB key will see this thread is, at a generous estimate, less than 2%.
    - Therefore, the original poster is almost certainly shafting someone who has lost their USB key with lots of course-related material, by not handing it into the security desk, in order to look for cheap laughs on this forum.
    - Anyway, it's not even all that embarrassing. Seth Rogen is in it, so it's hardly XXX pron. (and yes I did accidentally type "pron")

I hope this is a joke, OP, because otherwise it's terribly immoral!

Really? i've come across one or two 300mbs that i thought were ok (though they were rare, i usually stick ot 700mb AVIs when it comes to that kinda thing).

Surely there is information in the college files on the usb that would help you to return it to it's owner?

    +1

First there's the name, and then the attitude. Jesus it's a crappy USB, the owner probably isn't even looking for it. You'd think the OP had just found a cure for cancer the way he's powertripping. Nobody wants your awfully named comedy movie in usb form, throw it in the bin where it belongs and stop getting ideas above your station.

    I pity the fool.

I'll return the USB key in due course. It's 11pm at the moment so I can't give it back immediately, can I?

For those interested: Yes the film is in MKV format and takes up just over 300,000 kB.

find the persons name from some course work on it.
    Go to the student finder
    Email them
    Get a fuzzy feeling inside
You'd want it done for you... and would be very gratefull if it was.

And whats wrong with having that movie on a memory key. Yes its a pretty crap movie but what makes it embarassing. It has the word porno in it???? :O :O :O

Sorry, I could have my wires crossed, I saw MKV and thought Blu-Ray rip, which defo wouldn't fit on a 2GB memory stick.

    Apologies for the confusion!

Well, getting caught in the act of ILLEGAL FILE SHARING is kinda embarassing, mat :D

the getting caught bit is, mind you, not the doing it part.

I'd say there are far more people who read this and post, because posting in this forum generally involves tangling yourself in a horrible quagmire of ill-informed opinions and congenitally stupid people, while reading the forum is generally free of caveats, that and I would say the people who read this forum are far more likely to be of the warezing type than those who don't, so I would say your 2% estimate is a bit off the mark

The general point, though, that the USB's owner is by no means guaranteed to even know what boards.ie is, let alone browse it frequently enough to see this thread, stands. As does the general sentiment being expressed that the OP is a cock. OP, even if it is 11PM and you can't turn it in yet, you've basically made a thread for someone to beg you to give them back something of theirs, with class notes and such on it that, if they're as detailed as you say, are probably quite important to them. Even if you aren't compassionate enough to go to the trouble of tracking them down, at least stop being a knob-end, delete this thread and hand it in tomorrow.

Why did you go rooting through someone's personal files?

There's a right and wrong way to get things back to people, and then there's actin the prick.

Speaking of USB's, I left mine in one of the computers in LB08 last night at about 11, I came in just after 9 this morning...and its gone! Couldn't believe it. I luckily have a back-up of everything, but its just so irritating. I know I definately left it there. Here's me hoping that somebody leaves it at the security desk..

Wasnt aware people were using doucher, I mean I've been using it but if it starts taking on mainstream then I will have to stop...though is boards the mainstream

Not as bad as a guy i know who stole one (he lost his and is an amoral bastard). If i see an item in the computer rooms i just leave it where it is. The owner usually comes back within an hour looking for it.

I left a USB key in the computer once this year,I was rushing to get a lab report printed. Very glad that people just left it there and I picked it up a few hours later.

Hmm... A lot of the words you used in this post are in fairly mainstream use these days. I'd say you should stop using all of them. To be safe, only use words that you know for sure aren't being used too widely. I can confirm that the word doucher is not fully mainstream just yet. Also, the following words have fallen out of fashion lately so you could use these too: I, am, a, complete...

I find so many USB keys that people leave behind! I used to hand them into the security office..but I just leave them there now..for all I know they probably only left it there a minute ago

..any time ive forgotten my memory stick I check the last pc I was on and its usually still there..less hassle for guy if you just leave it there..

Although someone could have a really bad memory I guess!

Good times, good times (except the stalking part:pac:). I always manage to forget mine in the mac labs, cause of the way the USB ports are behind the monitors. Outta sight, outta mind and all that jazz. Upstairs security booth seems to be the place to go with found keys, Hamilton-wise. The guy has a box full of them behind the desk. He seems pretty well used to the deal too...

This would be quite funny if it turned out to be the same key. Firstly because it's a 2% chance that the guy would see it, let along start a thread about losing a key, and secondly, because the OP is being such a twat about it.

P.S. That film is decently good.

    Keyboard USB port ftw.

Also +1 on the movie praise, I'd go as far to say it's hilarious

From what I can see the OP was just trying to have a bit of a laugh about it so how about chilling out a bit on the whole attacking the OP front.
