    HI All,

have just bought a new laptop and looking for some advice with regard to; setting up the machine/OS
transferring files from my old machine
maintainence/best practices (cause i won't be buying again in a hurry)

I'm sure there's a lot of people in this forum who had to do this recently. I had my old machine for 6 years so there's a lot of important stuff on it files/applications but i don't want to transfer everything.

And looking to be able to work on college projects that i've already started on the old machine as soon as possible on the new machine.... - will try and make this post as clear as possible !

And thanks in advance for any responses....

OS - have got windows vista - Home Premium. As far as i know Dell offer a windows 7 upgrade.

    1) Is this worth getting?

    2) Should i hold off transferring files from my old laptop or does it make a difference when you upgrade OS?

Transferring files from my old laptop - basically i am looking to transfer some but not all of the files/applications that i had on my old machine

    3) Tried reading up on this and couldn't really make sense of the 'Files and Settings Transfer Wizard'. Can i use this to transfer certain files (don't really want to transfer stuff that i no longer use on the old machine) onto an external HD and then use this to transfer to the new machine?

    4) Should i just manually transfer the files i want to the external drive and then copy onto the new machine?

    5) Is there any way of getting my Microsoft Office (2003) from my old machine. I don't have any Cds for this any more? This would be VERY handy for me? Got Works 9 with the new laptop but use office a lot for college (know about open office but sometimes handier to have MS Office for projects, etc.)

    6) What is the easiest way to transfer applications like my mp3 player software/digital camera software (not to sure if/where to find the Cds) and stuff like my java programming ?

    7) what is the easiest way to transfer downloaded applications - think i still should have the set-up files somewhere on the old machine?

    8) used avira anti-virus on the old machine (found it didn't slow up the machine as much as AVG) but also heard that you should only have one anti-virus - don't think there is any on the new machine - is there an easy way to check and if not i can download what i used before?

    Maintainence

    9) I use the laptop as a desktop replacement - was reading up about preserving the battery - the battery in the last machine is well and truely dead - so read that some people recommend removing the battery and drain/charge it every month to avoid continual small-discharge/charge cycle. Other people say it makes no difference. New machine has Li-ion battery - any opinions?

    10) the sound on my last machine deteroriated badly - i've a theory that running the sound through my stereo wasn't a good idea. It got to the stage where i couldn't watch a dvd on it (with the nosie of the fan) - any best practices for not damaging the sound/speakers
