    Hi

I want to get a external hard drive >500GB but for all the models ive seen the only os support is for windows or mac os. Do i have to buy special drives for linux?

I'd imagine it would be fine man. I have a 320 GB external hard drive that I have used with Ubuntu, Arch, Debian, Windows and probably a few more. I borrowed a 500 gb one from a friend before with it's own power source. I think it worked fine with linux iirc, but it wasn't recognised by a PS3.

Should be grand really, if there's some encryption or transfer software that comes on the drive, this may be only for Windows / Mac and maybe that's what they mean. My 320gb drive had some software like that on it that I just deleted. Don't even know what it was for tbh.

Edit: Sorry, my one is actually 160gb. This one is the same model except it's 320 gb. It only specifies windows or mac too.

Drives are just external storage devices and fully support Linux. As the previous two posters said it will come with some software which will only be for Mac/Windows but you don't need it to use the drive. Usually the software is backup software and possibly some encryption - both of which you can do natively in Linux anyway.

EncFs is a fairly nice simple way to do it. Truecrypt is more supposed to be more secure and can be accessed under windows. If you wanted you could partition your harddrive and have an entire truecrypt partition.

Or you can just create an encrypted volume - right click on a folder and Encrypt.
