If you buy a car in the UK and import it to Ireland, doesn't the UK garage have to send the vehicle reg book to the DVLA to register it in the buyers name? In that circumstance it surely is not possible to present and pay at your local VRT office in Ireland if you don't have the registration book/log in your name? How long does it take to process from the DVLA's end?

    Thanks

The garage will give you the export section of the v5c which you can use to vrt the car in Ireland.

Thanks, so the section they give me will have all the Co2 emission details that the VRT office need on the car etc?

Yep. CO2 emmisions are on it.
You'll also need to fill out a form and give a copy of the reciept from the dealer.

You need to leave with the full V5, minus the slip that the garage send to the DVLA.

Mr Anan1 is right. You take most of the V5 document with you. I think the section the garage/seller send to the DVLA is section 13 (or perhaps 10) --- its purple in colour and at the end of the form.

A lot of UK sellers will not be used to this "export" so its worth telling them before hand so that they can check with DVLA on the process themselves...

I can't see a "quick" Thank you link??, so Thanks.. the full log/reg document minus the Export section then.

Like Kyote00 has said, some dealers are not familiar with exporting cars and will insist on sending the form off to the DVLA but you must insist on taking the full V5 with you minus the export section. Otherwise you will be in for a lot of heartache in the future.

If they refuse, just direct them to check the DVLA website where the export procedure is explained, or else get them to ring the DVLA diectly.

As almost all the replies stated you MUST ensure that you bring the FULL V5 with you when you import a car from the UK. if the seller wants to send the export section of the V5 to the DVLA then let him, but only the export section. the vrt office will not let you re-register the car here without the V5. The thing to remember here is that the DVLA in swansea cannot register a UK vehicle to non UK resident, and will not send a V5 to ireland without an awful lot of hassle on your part. most dealers in the UK are familiar with this procedure but it will seem strange to a private seller, who will assume that the V5 must be sent to the DVLA to record the change of ownership. By the way the export section isn't really important as the vrt office here will notify the the DVLA of the change of details.

the DVLA site tells you that a seller should hand over the complete document and write a letter to the DVLA telling them its been exported..
