What type of irons do you play? (Blades, cavity backs etc...)

What type of irons do you guys use? Blades, cavity backs etc... and what handicaps are you?

I'm playing the Nike SQ irons at the moment (cavity back), they're pretty good and very forgiving. I'm a 14 handicap. I'd love to invest in a set of blades (the new Nike Victory Reds look great!) but I don't think they'll be too much use to me unless I get to single figures.

Like yourself i play off 14 and use Ping G10 irons.I love these irons and cant see myself changing for a few years, when i do change i would like to try Pings i series irons.
Iron play is the strongest part of my game and i would love to think i would be able to use a set of blades but i cant see my game benefitting from them.If a lot of pros on tour are using cavity backs i think that says it all really.Dont make the game any more difficult than it already is.

I play Titleist AP2 irons. Best set I have ever played with. Handicap is 2

I absolutely love my irons. Taylormade Tour Burners. Project X shafts. Play off 4.
They're quite midsize, and literally any level of player could hit them. I've used everything from blades to chunky Callaways, and I've never hit so many greens.

I would suggest that unless you hit the ball consistantly there is no point buying one set or another based on their properties. Only when you have nailed down your trajectory, distance etc. should you look at the different irons and what they may offer.

I went to replace my irons last week and the pro put on new grips, made them 2 degrees more upright and told me to go away!

Mizuno Mx-23. The long irons are cavity backed and the short irons are blades. Not sure how you would describe them but I think they are a combo set. They are a nice feeling club being a forged set.

I'm using MacGregor M685's, midsized forged cavity backs, flighted rifle 5.5's and NDMC grips as standard. Nice neat appearance at address, playing off 10 They suit me perfectly well. And I got them really cheap too.
Rafared, you sure those MX23's are blades in the short irons? I could have sworn they were cavity back's:confused:

Are blades and musclebacks not the same thing? Can't beat the Cobra pro MBs.

beautiful looking club. tried them in fore a few months back but for some reason was hitting them about 15 yards less than my 690mbs so stayed with them.

Cavity back - Ping i10. Handicap 9. Nice irons but not pretty .. AP2s on top of the replacement list.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 281 ✭✭dnjoyce

Adam's Idea pro - hybrid for 3 and 4 iron then cavity the rest of the way with black gold stiff shafts. Handicap 2.

    Mizuno MP-60
    Play off 5

Mizuno MX 25s, play off 18 but stopped playing comps years ago and never bothered handing in 3 cards. Was looking at a set of Orka blades in Kilkenny this morning and they look nice. Wouldn't mind trying them out;)

Does that mean that a lot of that clubhead is hollow?

Always played with some model of graphite shafted Big Bretha but last year I switched to steel shafted Ping ISI K irons. Outstanding clubs. And I've dropped the lower irons and replaced them with Cleveland Halos. All made a big difference.

Haven't noticed any loss of distance myself. Was using Mizuno Pro IIs before. Cobra's are a bit heavier and they seem to give a slighty straighter ball flight. Both are lovely clubs, just the Mizunos were at least 10 years old so it was time to change them this year....

Got a set of Ping G10s 18 months ago. Delighted with them.
Had Taylor Made TP blades before that, great clubs but too good/precise for me.
    Totally converted to Ping now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 76 ✭✭lemon head

    Nope i aint Mr.Woods.lol

And yeah the clubhead are hollow.

Nice flight on the irons and distance wise it perfect for me, have been really impressed with the brand.

I have the driver SP 700 and its by far the best driver i have used.

Tried Cobra ZL ,TM burner, Callaway Diablo,Cleveland monster XL and Ping G15. None of these has been impressive for me.

That's the sh*t I'm talkin' about! I play MP-52's, hope to upgrade to these babies or something similar in the next few years. Surprised more people here don't play Mizuno's- they're awesome!!

Is this fairway wood still legal to play in competition. Anyone recommend a good utility club to replace a 3 iron. H/C 6.

Mizuno MP 57 with Project X 6.0 shafts. Got them last March and I love them. Have to say the Mizuno mp67 look beautiful as do the Titleist Blades !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,711 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

Currently using - no golf clubs as I sold my old set. Once I get the ankle back in working order I'll be forking out for a new set. Don't think I'm quite up to the blades yet, but will have to see once I test out a few sets!!!

Last set I played with were the Calloway FT Irons, liked the look at address, but not really that impressed with the look of them in general. They did travel when I connected though!
