A solution to Large Threads

    is simple. Roll them.

I understand there are technical issues with searches of large threads. I have some minor database experience so I can see why. The solution is to do what other forums do - i.e. weather forums do - with perenial threads like "Todays Weather Discussion"

Mod creates a new thread. Called Todays Weather - Date. First post is of the type "continue discussion here"
Mod posts in old thread a link saying "continued here"
    Mod closes the old thread.

This could be done for the very large running threads. Weather forums do it, for obvious reasons, at about midnight. Its a new day. Could be done here every X number of posts. Doesnt have to be exact.

So the count to a million would roll every 1000, or so.

sounds a bit like the filing system at work. Just chunk all of the posts from March into a March thread and then start an April thread, etc.

They have found a way of doing it that reduces the server load, so it is not an issue at the moment apparantly.

This describes how I did it.

No. The current system is a bodge which barely works, it's not a long-term fix. Threads will still have to be closed when they get too big.

A clever solution, but indeed a hack, go for smaller threads say i.

Ok, have seen that this has been moved into development.

However its not a bug. Nor a feature request. It's a rule for mods.

It needs to go somewhere else, or be closed.
