Facebook's pathetic groups and causes etc...

I know it's not just me, so won't open with the predictable is it just... before my statement...

How pathetic and childish are the vast majority of these 'bandwagon' petition groups such as 'We will not pay for Facebook, 15 million members required to ensure this', as crappy as it may seem to some still reeling from the result last week, 'Petition for rematch' (among a fcuking umbrella of slightly differently named groups created by no one who is actually doing anything further other than have created a group with x amount of members) among loads more.

Don't get me wrong, become a fan of whatever it is you are into but I just find these particular groups to be a waste of time.

Also when M Jackson was reported to have been taken to hospital, at least an hour before the confirmation, groups had already sprung up saying RIP MJ, ffs. So the invites started coming, Join the group - insert cliche cheesey words for rest in peace etc MJ... Having been a fan of him all my life, I wasn't about to start joining some other fan's page as proof I was somewhat touched by his passing or that I was a fan... That and the fact that I was a bit sickened they had been up since before confirmation of his death.

My point is I find these groups to be completely and absolutely pointless and wondered what other members on here think of them. It's irritating how newspapers refer to such petitions or 'funnily named groups' as a concrete sign people were affected, or reacted... It's a little like they are old people in media reporting or something.

On another note, anyone think the one liner replies from smart asses looking for lots of thanks are dorks/nerds/losers?? :D

That pisses me off no end. I've setup a facebook group about it.

Are they anymore ridiculous than 'poking' or 'writing on someone's wall' or whatever else facebook offers? As long as nooone treats them as a true reflection of the veiw of the entire populus, whats the problem?

I'm going to defriend anyone who sends that to me.
    It's pathetic.

How brand new or stupid are these people at the internet?

I remember all the forwarded emails and pm's:
"oh noes, Bill Gates is shutting hotmail'.
"oh no, frd this to everyone or they are going to start charging for yahoo messenger."

Bill Gates will donate $1 to some loser country for every fool you forward this to.

No HE FÚCKING WON'T YOU THICK ****.

You're old fashioned! I use a holoprojector to project a 3D image of me to all my friends on Omicron Persei 9.

Last night I went through the applications section on my facebook account and filtered by "authorised".

There were a fair few I'm certain I didn't authorise. So I'd check that out. The 3rd party apps aren't supported by facebook themselves, so basically they could be doing anything.

Dunno OP, not much you can do about it, nature of the beast and all that. Lets just say I've hit the "ignore" button alot more than the "accept" one.

And Facebook itself is completely grown up and serious?
The entire concept of social networking sites are a bandwagon group.

Of course not.. You don't actually think that these pointless groups are going to change anything do you?
    Nobody does.
People join them as both a badge to say they agree / disagree with something and as part of the "Be seen going with the crowd" mentality of social sites.

Unsubstantiated rumours and gossip on the internet?
Taken by some people as fact?
    Say it aint so...

    Congratulations..
That would be a personal choice that you made without disliking people who choose different to you...
    See how it works?

At the most they would refer to it as an "online petition" or "Registered objectors" or something similar.
Now if you don't know in this day and age, that those statements carry about the same weight as wet toilet paper, then you deserve to be left with the twisted view the media would give you.

No.. I think a lot of them are very witty.

This forum might have been better.. :)

Cause to help prevent Phillipino fishermen from using live dogs as shark bait

This was an actual cause / group.... I can imagine the fishermen going home and logging into Facebook, " hey guys, come and look at this, theres a crowd on Facebook want us to stop feeding the dogs to the sharks... suppose we'd better stop doing that then.."

It's the vaguer ones that annoy me more. "Stop child abuse! Join this if you think child abuse is wrong!" N0. Or "Stop Breast Cancer!" By joining a fcuking facebook group? Seriously, breast cancer?

    Say no more
About 200 soccer fans marched to the French embassy in Dublin yesterday to call for a rematch of Ireland’s disputed World Cup playoff against France.
Tony Barry from Dublin City Centre said he was disappointed with the turnout. “About 300,000 people joined a Facebook group to support us. I was expecting thousands to be here. I don’t know why so few have turned up but I think it could be the weather,” he said.

Yeah, the weather, that was it.

It's almost as annoying as threads posted here about the subject.

The "Thierry henry is a cheat" groups are now just making advertising announcements trying to get us to fill in surveys/take part in stupid quizzes

Yeah it's a bloody joke these ones are stupid equally. Do you know someone who has been affected by x..... or whatever. Joining this page is going to help because you are using a computer which the vast majority of use non renewable sources that actually hinder your surrounding environment and inevitably health...

Ignore tbh. I'm a member of great groups such as: "When I played Tomb Raider, I locked the butler in the freezer." and "Should Trebor mints be half price for people called Robert?" and even "I think I should get the parachate because I'm great"

Best group ever: "An Arbitrary Number of People Demanding That Some Sort Of Action Be Taken"

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

And to make it even worse, there's no group for those of us who are pro-child abuse and who want to keep breast cancer. :(

Ha, I'm joined to that. :D
"A Bazillion People Against Everything Bad" is another one of my favourites.

Totally agree with you OP, causes, mafia wars, farmville.... AAAAGGGHH !!! MAKE IT STOP !!!!!:mad:

Thankfully you can adjust your settings to ignore particular apps, or better still you can choose to ignore all such invites from any particular irritating and brain dead friend that keeps sending them to you.

...farmville :rolleyes: ....... fucking retardville more like

To be honest I'm a big fan of joining causes/pages that explicitly make their reason absolutely pointless, something that is impossible to campaign for, such as:

Spitting out chewing gum and kicking it on the volley

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 444 ✭✭schween

Don't join them then! This should be in R&R.

I love this one though: "I Will Go Slightly Out of My Way To Step On A Crunchy-Looking Leaf".:D
    Crunch crunch crunch!

Argh, I've deleted fb friends for joining those sort of groups, '100,000 people to stop rape'? Yep, rapes will still be happening when the group is in the 80 and 90 thousands but when it hits that magic number...
