Moral Dilema - advise please!

    Hi,

    I've a bit of a moral dilema that I wasn't expecting!

I had a few drinks, then a bit of food, wandered into a "casino" with a friend.... just a casual "granny" casino in dublin. Ended up playing roulette, put €30 into the machine.... got lucky a few times and ended up with €200. Thought I'd quit when I hit that so locked my account and went to the cashier for money.

Firstly can I say that when you put €10 in the machine it comes up as "100" on the machine.... 100 "units".

When I went to get my €160 the cashier started counting out €1600 (they read 1600 units). Despite seeing them before in there I thought oh God it's a poor newbie, I didn't want them to screw up so I said "Are you sure, I thought it was €160?"..... they laughed a bit and another guy came in and said "Yeah it's €1600, that's a nice surprice!".... !! Not sure what to do, and 95% sure it was meant to be €160 I took the €1600 and left and went home.

Now I'm home. I don't know what to do!!!!!

I know casinos are the lowest of the low..... and they take money from the weak (ahem, I'll exclude me for now).... but I'm a very honest person (that's why I spoke up and tried to correct them)..... should I keep the money? Or should I ring them/the-boss tomorrow? I don't know what to do.

On one hand, they're scum, and take advantage of people. On the other hand, they have me on CCTV taking 10 times more than I was due (95%sure!)..... and I did correct them!!!!

    What do you think?

keep it, if two staff members verified the sum then that's that.

you're not 100% sure so accept that you may have been wrong about the 160

Enjoy it whatever you end up spending it on.

If you pointed out their mistake to them, and they contradicted you, then your conscience is clear!

I did point out the mistake to them. They thought it a bit funny than I was questioning it!

Maybe €1600 isn't much money to them?? Not a huge casino but decent size.

If it was any other business in society I wouldn't even be in a dilema, I'd just give it back without even thinking. When I say I'm 95% sure, that is a real 95%, I'm good at maths.

    Hmnnn...

Am I going to leave some staff in a horrible situation tomorrow? They review the CCTV, see me, then some time in the future I get a "surprise".

Or do I say "It's their fault, I did bring attention to the issue before even getting handed the cash" so I'm all good and all moral boxes checked!!

At times like this I wish I was a cold person!

Go back and explain the situation to a manager. Casinos are disgusting places but don't fall to their level. €160 is still a nice sum of money to have. If were you, I'd go back and find out the truth.

Don't give it back under any circumstances-there is absolutely nothing wrong morally with doing a casino out of money (even though I don't think that's the case here anyway.) If it weighs on your mind then give it to Vincent de Paul-think of all the good it could do at this time of year.

OP, are you sure it wasn't *you* who made the mistake? And risked ten times more than you thought you were?

In all honesty, these places are run pretty strictly and I can't imagine *two* staff members giving you ten times more than they should.

You checked it with them. Twice. They are certain you won 1600. Enjoy and have a good Christmas!

I'm on the fence about this one. On the one hand, you have checked twice and they both said it was 1600, so you have done your duty.

I wouldn't be worried about doing the casino out of money, I would more worry about a cashier losing their job...but since two of them confirmed it it seems less likely that both of them would get fired.

As well, I wonder how likely it is that two casino employees could make a mistake that large. Maybe, just maybe, in that 5% of error, you didn't understand what you were doing on the machine and actually won that money.

Good to see you can justify stealing by giving it to the poor, hurrah for Robin Hood!

If it was me I would likely keep it, altho if I knew that someone was going to loose their job over it, I might reconsider. If the person is'nt going to loose their job but you are still bothered by it, then return it or give it to charity.

If you walked away without checking then yes I would have suggested you go back. But you did bring it to their attention and a second staff member verified it. Enjoy the money, most people aren't that lucky in those places.

Sounds like you made the mistake. Casinos make their money off other people's losses, you can be absolutely assured that if they overpaid you, you wouldn't have made it as far as the front door, someone would have apprehended you pretty sharpish. It's your money, you won it so don't think there is an issue tbh.

Nice to see there's some honesty left in the world!

You tried to correct the mistake but they were having none of it! Take it as Karma's way of saying Merry Christmas!

There's a number of things that could have happened here, someone could have been on the machine before you and slipped out for a cigarette leaving their credits in it [Often happens in my local casino!].
Could you have had more than a few and simply put a bit more money than you expected in? Or even have reached 100€ and simply may have just won it on a bet you may not have noticed you placed?

Could also be new machines that staff weren't used to... Regardless of all this, you did try to rectify the mistake, with two people telling giving you the go ahead.

Spend away my friend... Enjoy it!

    Keep it!
Casino's have taken enough money off me altough that's my fault because I lost it!

Ring them today, tell them you just want to check that you got the correct amount and was there any money missing when they cashed up. It'll put your mind at ease and you can enjoy spending the money. I very much doubt that 2 cashiers got it wrong, I'd say you just won more than you thought you had.

Phone them for peace of mind. They may well be scum, as you say, but you only have to answer for your own actions.

Thanks for all the responses! I've sobered up now!

The money is sitting with me a bit happier today too (spending it in my head)! :p

Now in the clear light of day I think I might have indeed been in the wrong. Best drunken mistake yet!! I think they have changed the machine settings... it used to be that 30 units were €3. This was becase the smallest bet is 10cent... so starting at 1 unit. But not I'm remembering there being 0.1 and 0.5 units! That wasn't so before. I also kept hitting my max bet very quickly which was annoying. I had to put extra chips on different numbers just to make up a "decent bet"! So I reckon I was just betting at 10times what I thought I was!!!

I'll try get someone to go back into the casino and confirm this! I'll stay clear for now!

Don't be so worried! If two staff confirmed it, then that's that. They are trained and vetted professionals, they are right.

If they both checked it, and they were sober - Perhaps the computer made a mistake?? In that case it wasn't your fault, or their fault. Problem solved!

Good on you for having such a moral conscious. Spend it wisely ;)

  • Why are casinos scummy? People go to them out of their own free will. If they can't control their greed, that's their problem.

OP, I think you did enough already by asking them to check, but in your shoes I probably would ring up and ask again. Just be aware that if you do, and it was a mistake, you almost definitely will be asked to bring it back. If they say they're short, you can hardly keep it then. What a dilemma indeed.

2 sober staff members vs 1 drunk customer?

Odds would be in favour of the staff members being right. And you tried to check twice anyway.

If you feel bad about it/still not sure donate a few hundred to charity.
I think they set something up for the floods in the west at the moment....

OK the ethics of the situation is this.

You went to a casino and bet and won at a game you were a novice on. You won but your winnings were more than expected and you pointed this out. So you asked were the correct and it was verified to you that it was.

    You did everything correctly.

So what is the likely action the casino will take if you go back with your tale of woe. They will take the money whether it was legitimate winnings or not. Casinos are games of chance and entertainment and they make profit by paying out less than they take in.

If you bet 1600 more than you intended would they give it back. No.

So you are left with the ethics and in my book as you gave them the opportunity to check the money etc your conscience should be clear.

The other option is to go back and bet it and the likelyhood is that the house will be 1600 richer. They wont give it back to you if you loose.

I agree either keep it or give it to someone who really needs it i.e. not the casino!
