    Hi all,

I want to get a gait analysis done with hopefully some info on how to improve my running technique, which one would you all recommend? I'm living in Galway but do be home to Tipperary/Limerick so could go round there if there's anywhere recommended? I would travel to Bray where Amphibian King is but i'd rather somewhere closer to home if possible!

    Cheers!

I can only speak from my own experience here - when I started to run I went to Elverys and they told me I had high arches but didn't really overpronate and sold me a pair of Asics - exactly which ones they were I can't remember? In a few months I'd injured my achilles tendon.

When it healed I went to Amphibian King - who told me I do in fact overpronate & gave me brooks adrenaline. Haven't had and injury since - that was about 4 years ago? Bray isn't near me either but I consider it worth the drive.

Not sure at all the answer to the question but I have only taken up running in the past few weeks. Got a gait analysis done in elverys and bought a pair of Asics Kayanos. Three runs into the new shoes and the physio advised that I irrated my Plantar Fasciitis. He suggested best approach is Orthotics because they are made specifically for your foot and not a general shoe that is designed to cover a wide range of people. Orthotics can be expensive though, I believe.

Runways did a fitting on a friend, recommended a shoe for him. But when they said that they didn't have it in his size that he should get a size smaller and it would stretch.............. He got them for half the price in arnotts, in his size.

If you are lucky in Elverys you will speak to someone who knows what they are talking about but in general i have found that compared to amphibian king they do not compare. I regard amphibian king more highly. they can spend up to 45 mins with an individual and want you to get the correct runner. I personally have not had that experience in elverys, others may have.

With regard to your plantar.... orthotics are not necessarily the answer to your problem and i would not be getting them just because a physio said so. they can often cause more problems than they solve after you fork out a lot of money for them When you were put into the asics were you put into a few different makes of shoe and shown that the asics were the best for you or were you just put into a pair - told to run - and then told to buy them?

you said you had taken up running recently... are you doing too much too soon and your feet arent used to the strain you are putting them under? Perhaps ease back a little and let your feet get stronger with your training. and be sure that you are in the shoe that best suits your gait.

What would i be looking at paying for a session with Amphibian King? 45mins and a full assessment would be great stuff. I might try to get to Dublin in the next few weeks and call out to check it out.

the last time i got running shoes i got 4 different places to check my gait, one of them that might interest you is outfield sports in carrick-on-suir.they have a biomechanical scan machine and are very helpful.the other places i got checked in were feet first in killarney, elverys on nassau street and the edge in cork city.

There is no charge in Amphibian King for the Gait Analysis. It takes about 30 mins and involves trying on different brands of runners and taking a video to analyse your running gait. I found the service great and the price for the shoes reasonable.

Don't think any of them will give you any guidance on your running technique. You might find that their comments are focussed on how well the shoe fits and supports you while running. You're better off joining a club if you want tips on improving technique.

Really, that's interesting - pity the guy I dealt with didn't tell me that! He did an analysis, recommended & sold me a shoe...

Did they vary in their analysis or where they pretty much the same result?

If your interested in a more comprehensive clinical gait analysis Irish Fit in Dunlaoire offer that, but I think you'll need to be prepared to shell out at least €100. I don't know anyone who has done that but there was an article with Richie Corcoran from Raheny in a recent Irish Runner.

amphibian king are brillant. I had a few injuries two years ago and got new runners there and never looked back.

Top staff too and if they find two runners that do the job they never push you towards a certain pair, they let you decide even before you know the price.

Obviously you can change your mind if you picked the real expensive ones :D

    Great shop and great staff

I've found them very good and on a couple of occasions when left with a choice between two I've opted for the cheaper one before they even told me the prices, there was certainly then no pushing of the more expensive ones.

You seem to be a bit confused here.Do you understand what a gait analysis consists of?
Elverys only had gait analysis in store just over 16months.The guy probably gave u an opinion.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 466 ✭✭thirstywork

The good thing about Amphibian king is the staff there do it day in day out.Staff in other stores aint got the same passion.
Its important the person selling the shoes has experience of running and can give feeback to the customer.
Yes the gait analysis is a video of the feet but as one other person said here, feedback about the upper body is important.

I used to do a bit of work with Elverys and went down to the 'launch' of their gait analysis on Naussau St. and had it done. The guy who did it wasn't too confident and I had to prompt him to establish where I pronated or suppinated and he didn't notice I had arches higher than everest based on that I would say they're not great for gait analysis. Having said that they discount product on a regular basis so could be a good place to pick up a bargin if you're familiar with a pair of trainers that works for you.
