Pat Kennys The Frontline on Gardai and antisocial behaviour

Pat Kennys show The Frontline had an interesting discussion on the Gardai, their position in society now in this Ireland of change and their approach or stance against antisocial behaviour in the country. The showed aired on monday evening.
The common thread in the studio audience seemed to be a loss of confidence in the Gardai due to inadequate measures in dealing with antisocial behaviour. Also apparent was the low level of community policing with a lot of people mentioning that they didnt know their local gardai.
Obviously in a growing Ireland, familiarity with the law in towns with booming populations is a thing of the past. Knowing the local guard by name would be realtively unheard of today but twenty years ago young teens/adolescents would have known the neighbourhood gardai and possibly feared them.
I would wonder is fearing a guard the answer. The old days of a "clip round the ear" from the law are well gone but did this approach to policing really have rsults when guards where more local and at grass roots level with unruley teens and adolescents?

Fear or respect, whatever works at cutting down crime is fine. The Gardai are unable to operate as they did in the old days as said Garda would loose his job at the least.

I know if I got brought home by the Gardai I would have been in for a sh*t storm of epic proportions. These days, most of the parents of the young teens etc that you speak of dont give a rats ass or are simply in denial. I see it day in, day out.

Blame the law, blame the parents, don't blame the Gardai. We are day in/day out bringing these youngsters in and getting laughed at. There are no consequences for these young people so they do whatever they like.

This is true and herein lies the problem of modern day society. The problem lies with the bad parenting and the resulting unruly teenagers or delinquents as i see them. No respect because their parents never taught them any respect. Many times i have seen around my own estate children out drinking when they should be in school. When i went to report to their parents they basically told me to f off my little johnny would never do such a thing and slammed the door in my face. You get no thanks for reporting this to their parents because as the poster above pointed out the parents either don't give a monkey's or are living in a state of self denial. So i have a little solution for both these offworld parents and their little gremlins.

People think the gardai are supposed to look after a bunch of unruley yougins who frankly don't know their place. The best solution i can think about to solve this problem is to hit the parents(many degenerates themselves) with massive antisocial behaviour fines for their offsprings anti social behaviour. Then they'll soon get their children under control.

Theres no point in arresting people when there's nowhere to incarcerate them.
