    I know this may seem like a small problem in comparisson to some of the other personal issues people have on this forum but here goes,
    I recently graduated from a masters and i've never felt worse. It was virtually impossible for me to get a job and now i'm on a VERY unstable minimum wage retail contract which nearly amounts to 6 day weeks.
    My masters was in philosophy so getting a job relating to it without continuing education was very hard. I'm trying to save money so I can get out of the country maybe to Oz/canada or to the US(graduate visa) but the process of saving money is so slow and its becoming unbareable. Even when I've saved the money I for the first time in my life i have no idea what i want to do. I always wanted to be a writer or do something in arts but now that I older i feel like its impossible.
    My social life has taken a massive hit as i'm always way too tired to go out and I have no love life to speak of as i have no confidence. As dramatic as it sounds instead of seeing bright new beginngs I feel like everything thats good is over and its all just reached a big anti climax. I don't expect anyone to give me an answer I just needed to rant I guess. And I suppose it would make me feel better if I read that someone was in the same situation.

    Thanks for reading anyway

    Pretty whingy post. Exactly what job did you think was coming your way with a masters in philosophy?

    If you want to write then write it certainly wont happen if you dont put the words on paper, get motivated, try get a manual job nothing like mindless menial tasks and sweat to stimulate creative thought.

    Internet message boards not the answer anyways.

    The reality is that most people who become a success as writers or at other arty/creative occupations start by doing iit in their spare time and doing something else to pay the bills, just like you are.

    Message boards aren't the answer to anything but loads of people get helpful advice on here every day. Nothing wrong with that.

    Look, If you can't say anything constructive don't bother telling me that that was 'a pretty whingy post'. And asking what exactly i thought Iw ould get a job doing in philosophy isn't very helpfull either. I thought I was going to continue on in education but due to finanical trouble I couldn't but cheers for implying I made a stupid decision

    Also If you had properly read my post saying I worked in retail you would realise I DO have a job in manual labour, retail is full of mind numbing tasks.

    Organise your time properly (easier said than done) and dedicate maybe 2 hours a day to writing or commit to writing 2 pages a day, something like that.

    Join in properly here on boards, go to the boards beers if you want to go out.

    The country is an absolute mess right now with the recession, floods,etc. The best any of us can really do for now is be thankful for what we have, a house that isn't flooded, a job.

    There will be opportunities again, just not right now. Just because you can't afford to continue in education right now doesn't mean you never will.

    OP, you're not the only one in this situation (as you've acknowledged), one of my friends did a business masters, he's on the dole now, not even a sniff of a job and he's in serious debt (and the interest isn't helping!). In spite of this, I understand exactly where you're coming from, you're not whingey you along with the rest of us thought that there would be money there for us to go into research and with the recession, cuts etc... this is never going to materialise any time soon. So my advice would be to:
    Do a TEFL course (do the CELTA version, it's the hardest but the best);
    Get a teaching job far away (China's looking good and the money is very good);
    Leave Ireland for at least 5 years (it's not worth sticking around for). If you have to get a loan to cover the course costs etc... because within 3 to 6 months your loans will be cleared.

    You won't regret it, it'll be an experience!:D
