Silent phone calls

    Hi all,

Firstly, I don't know if this is the correct place for this. Mods please move to the appropriate forum.

Ok, the situation is like this... for the past few days, maybe three times a day, I've got what appear to be phone calls from a British number, going by the prefix code, 0044 123456. The first couple of times I picked up as normal, and said hello, and waited for someone to speak. But it's apparently an automated call of some sort, as there's absolutely no sound. If someone is on the other end, there would be a different tone, of ambient sound, but there's nothing.

I've called Irecom, and they were their usual helpful self  Ive been asked to log the calls and get back to them, but they can't say more than that.

Any ideas what could be going on? Is it possible to block this number?

    Log them

go to Gaurdai and have the number blocked. Its usually kids that do this.

have you got a car advertised for sale? Google the number - it might shed some light on it.

I don't reckon it's kids, to be honest. The number is too odd, and specific, if you see what I mean, to be just any kids calling random numbers. Some company of some sort has presumably paid for a number that doesn't even have a local prefix code.

EDIT: I've just gone to Google and typed in the number, and came up with this...

So lots of others are getting it too. Some mention that somebody asks to speak to the owner of the company, but others are saying that it hangs up after a couple of seconds, or it goes dead after they pick up.

The callers using 0044123456 are http://www.dotcomchrome.com/

Idiots pretending to be from Google selling Google adwords.

I am on the register not to be cold called so am going to sue them.

Scam. They want you to ring them back at premium rates. I rang back once and she began to say she had "something important to tell..." at which I said if you do, you ring me, and hung up. No call back

At least in the UK its being taken seriously. Not sure what the legal situation is here though.

Complain to eircom or whoever you use. Give them the CLI and demand that they block all calls from that ID to your number(s). It is a simple matter to route traffic like this to a tri-tone or music on hold while they run up a phone bill thinking that they are harassing you. Or better still "Please hold, someone will be with you shortly. Your call is important to us". Repeated over and over ad infinitum. Or similar....:)
