Yes it can be unlocked, but If you get a new iphone 3gs and it's over week 40 then it will only be tethered jailbreak, that means everytime you reboot ph you have to run blakrain again. More info here

o2 don't have anyway of knowing and shutting it down. just don't updated the firmware until there is a hack available and turn off auto check for updates to itunes. start reading from back.

When you buy phone look for the serial no on box, 4 and 5th digit are the week, if it's over 40 then it's only tethered jailbreak, they still have some less that week 40 in store, check them before you buy, don't tell the guy in store obviously.:D

Try the white 3gs. My sis got a pre week 40 one. Mines black and a week 41. For some reason, it doesnt need to be tethered if i reboot. Lucky me lol

Sorry to hijack the thread. Similar question I guess.

I am not an iPhone person but a friend of mine to whom I owe many favours broke her 8GB 3G yesterday and I volunteered to buy her a 3GS in repayment.

I of course didn't read up BEFORE I bought, so I now have a week 43 pay as you go 3GS and I opened it.

How do I go about unlocking it so that it can be used on Vodafone? Also, she says that her 3G (which the Voda rep supplied months back) was able to be updated on iTunes and has 3.1.2 on it now, which would verify that. Does this mean that it was factory unlocked? If so, and I unlock this one with black rain or whatever, will she be able to sync with iTunes and get all her settings onto the new one?

    Thanks in advance, iwb.

how much is it to but an iphone 3gs in a shop these days?

I paid 519 pay as you go for 16GB 3GS. I couldn't find it cheaper anywhere else besides on Adverts and as she needs it in a hurry, there wasn't one available that I could find.

I think it's lunacy myself, for a phone.

If you got a week 43 build then most likely its firmware is 3.1.2. You can jailbreak and unlock without having to update the firmware. Read back a few pages surely youre gonna spot the tutorial

EDIT: btw, its likely that you have to connect it to a computer and run blackra1n again if ever the phone hard reboots.

so you'd be looking at baout 619 for 32gb? when did you get it?

Guys, does the new blacksnow exploit not unlock and jailbreak the iphone 3GS?

As in, does this fix the fact that you must perform the jailbreak if the phone goes dead?

sorry I didn't reply here sooner. I got the phone at the time I was posting. It was a week 43 phone, so with blackrain, it would have to be redone after a power down.

My friend hasn't let it reboot since, so hasn't seen what happens. Not sure about blacksnow since then. At the time though, there was no solution and that is only two weeks ago or so.

thanks for that. im thinking of getting iphone with 3.1.2 but not 100% sure if I could put up with having to redo the jailbreak and unlock everytime my phone dies!

Well, if you can find a pre week 40 3Gs, you are in business. Alternatively, see if you can find a factory unlocked one. I have seen them on adverts.ie and they are more expensive but maybe worth the peace of mind.

if your iphone reboots or runs out of juice, you hve to connect it to your pc or laptop and run, just run, blackra1n again. if the phone is unlocked, you dont have to rejailbreak and unlock. just "make in rain" again

I bought a new 32gig 3Gs in CPW(Liffey Valley) yesterday, week 40, so not the 3.1.2 software. Ran Blackrain on it and now I have full unlock and jailbreak :)

Mine is running 3.1 software version, and I wont be updating to 3.1.2 until untethered jailbreak comes out.

Having to reboot it through Blackrain if the phone dies is epic fail tbh, and no sign from GeoHot as to when he is ready to release the untethered Jbreak.

Lads it has nothing to do with 3.1.2. The OS version has nothing to do with whether the jailbreak is tethered or not. Its the new bootrom installed after week 40ish that causes the problems. THIS CANNOT BE UPDATED ON A PRE WEEK 40 PHONE. THE BOOTROM CAN NEVER NEVER NEVER BE UPDATED BY THE USER. You can update the OS software no problem and re jailbreak if your phone has the old bootrom.

Have you turned your phone off yet ? You might be in for a shock , hopefully not.
