Temporary part-time work and JSA

    Temporary part-time work and JSA

I have been offered a temporary part-time contract 3 days a week for 2 months with really good money. I’ve been unemployed on JSA for a year and a half and I am now considered long term unemployed. Although I will only be working for a few weeks and then I’ll be back to square one with no job, the amount of money I will earn on this contract means that I will not be entitled to any JSA during that time. (I’ve worked this out from the information given on the SW official website) I’m delighted to have the work and the money! but what concerns me is that although I believe I won’t have to sign off or end my claim because I’m unemployed for the other 3 days, will the fact that I will not be receiving any actual money from my JSA claim mean that I will have to sign off and end my claim and put in a new claim when the contract ends?

I’m so fed up with not being able to find a full time job and even though this is only a short term contract I’m not passing up the chance offered but if I don’t find a full time job soon I don’t want to close off any options like possibly setting up something on my own and applying for BTWEA or going back to education next year and as far as I’m aware you need to be signing on for at least a year to qualify for such things. If because of the amount of money I’m earning in the short term on a part-time basis means that I have to end my claim and then start a new one I would not be considered long term unemployed and those possible options would be closed to me next year.

So the question is - can I still keep signing on as unemployed and retain my status as long-term unemployed even though for a few weeks I’ll have a part-time job and I’ll be earning too much money to receive any payment? After all, I will still be looking for a full time job and I will be unemployed 3 days a week. I don’t see a clear answer to this question on the SW website.

Second question – My employer has told me that he will pay me for the first month at the end of the month and for the second month at the end of that month. I don’t see that I will have any choice but to continue drawing JSA each week for the first month as I have no other income and my savings were exhausted some time ago. When I get paid for the first month I intend to tell the social of the days I’ve worked and everything I’ve earned and write them a cheque there and then for all that I’ve been overpaid during that month just as soon as I get paid for the first month. My employer will be paying PRSI contributions for me and I will be paying my share. I’m in no way trying to defraud the system but at the moment I couldn’t survive for a month without having some form of income. If I’m going to pay any overpayment straight back to them and explain the situation to them, that I needed it to survive for the month, is this likely to cause any problem for me or can anybody please suggest a way that I could take on this contract and not starve in the meantime?

I would be very grateful for any advice anyone would have on this but I do ask that before posting please ensure that if you have something to offer that could be helpful that it is correct!

    Many thanks
