What is the longest Regular Running or Cycling Commute in the Country...?

    Ok,
This became a topic of heated debate on a group run this lunchtime. We all know there are quite a few nut-cases out there, and I use that term affectionately, that regularly run, cycle or even kayak to and from work or college.

My question is - who covers the longest distance to on from work, on a regular basis, under their own steam.

I've heard some stories of heroic 'commutes' but don't know the actual facts.

What's the longest you know about with some certainty ?

    Mick.

This is just to scratch the surface since no one else has answered your question, but I think showry commutes about an hour each way cycling at a decent clip...

I'm sure hunnymonster or tunney can top that

it doesn't take me an hour but I cycle 9 miles to work and 9 miles back home again, on country bumpy roads. It used to be 7.5miles to work and 9 miles home but since the clocks went back it is too dangerous to cycle the main road into Limerick when dark. No fancy street lights like you might have in the big smoke!!!;) So I take back road to work which is longer , but I'm alive!!!

I always take the back road home.

I started to cycle to work in October when I finaly accepted I wasn't going to make the Dublin marathon through injury. The plan is exercise them leg muscles a different way so as not to cause more imbalances in the legs.

I occassionally run to (near) home from work (9 to 15 miles, depending on the route). Changing job location soon, which will leave me 13.5 miles from the nearest point to home I can safely run to, and plan to continue doing it occassionally....but it's by no means a regular thing.

I imagine there are much longer commutes than me. I'm 25 km. In summer I would run one way and cycle the other but this week I've been ill so getting the train.

I commuted 33km each way yesterday but can assure you it won't be a regular occurence!
    I usually drive/cycle...

During my few weeks in the wesht, I worked with a guy who cycled from Tuam to Galway city every morning. Not sure exactly how far that is though.

As a matter of interest that would mean you would have to run both directions before you could get on the bike. Then you would have the option of cycling as many times back and forth until you left the bike and ran again. Correct?

nope, say I would cycle from home to work on Monday morning (leaving bike in work overnight), then run home on Monday evening and run in Tuesday morning and cycle home Tuesday evening. etc Works out at a 25 km run and 25 km cycle per day. Of course that's not much of a cycle so usually, I would head off for a spin before heading home to get more distance in.

Okay maybe I'm easily impressed but I think that's pretty hardcore.

Surely Macanri must be correct - just you don't run both ways on the same day, but you have to do 2 successive runs to be able to retrieve the bike...

Do you end up carrying work clothes with you each day or do you have a wardrobe at work that lasts you the week :)?

My approach is bus in on Monday with enough clothes for the week, run home Mon; run in + out tues, Wed, Thurs; run in Fri, bus home with used clothes Friday pm.

I think HMs explanation works - no?

I would love to do that, unfortunately the lack of shower facils in work mean I can't...

Mah, I ran to work this morning, ran at lunch and will do a long run on the way home tonight, no showers in work. baby wipes all the way. The boots ones are crap, J&J are worth the extra cash. There is always a way.

You could even say HTFU?! Thanks for the tip, I'll give them a shot

I usually carry clothes on bike legs and just the minimum when running. I need a shower though.

Ran in and home form work the last 2 mondays, Not sure if i'm beter of doing this or just going to work later and doing a longer run .
Lucky to have a shower in the office , and working from home is nice too but running to work doenst get me many miles on those days.

I usually carry all my uniform for the week in on a monday when I'm most likely on the bike - if I plan on running home though I will either bus it or get a lift. We have showers but I'm a bit OCD when it comes to hygiene so I don't use them which is why I wouldn't run to work, baby wipes suffice for getting off the bike as I have a shower before I go out anyway.

I knew a lad who used to run from Tallaght to Cabra and back daily! think when it was clocked on a bike he uses sometimes too it came back around 25 - 30 miles a day on foot with a small backpack. lad was in the army and a bit of a fitness freak!

What do you do re work clothes? Do you leave a set in work the day before or do you carry them in with you?
