Hi I'm looking for some advice for my cousin. I live in the uk so am unfamiliar with the limitations of the Irish medical cards. My cousin has a medical card and recently broke his front tooth (incisor) and only has half of it left. He wants to get it fixed but doesn't think this would be covered by his medical card as it may be considered cosmetic. Could someone please tell me if this work to fix his front tooth is covered by the medical card or if it must be paid for?

    Many thanks

The medical card will cover a white filling (composite) for the front tooth. This maybe all thats required.
It will also cover first stage root canal treatment if necessary (approval has to be gotten prior to second stage begin carried out).
If a crown is require this is not covered and your cousin will have to pay privately.
    Hope that helps

quite recently there have been some positive changes ( unwritten and kinda arbitrary). A crown may be approved for a front tooth if the dentist writes a letter explaining the necessity. The tooth has to be in pretty bad shape. I have had approvals for 3 patients in recent weeks.

You have? I've stopped asking, because all I've been hearing is no.

because of the manpower shortage in the GMS clinics they seem to have decided to let dentists at large undertake some work that would have been rejected in the past.
