So I just happened to be on this page earlier which has two interesting stats that surprised me somewhat:

    1) Firefox is well ahead of IE
    2) This related page shows linux usage based on browser statistics growing slowly over time (currently at around 4%). I actually think that's not too shabby.

It's great to see Open Source projects getting greater market share but I think that's about all you can really take from this; their market share is increasing. I don't think too much can be taken from the actual figures. How many housewifes running WinXP & IE6 do you think visit www.w3shcools.com? Now in comparison, how many web devlopers running Linux & Firefox do you think visit that site?

I think they can explain it better than I can :) (directly from their browser stats page):
W3Schools is a website for people with an interest for web technologies. These people are more interested in using alternative browsers than the average user. The average user tends to use Internet Explorer, since it comes preinstalled with Windows. Most do not seek out other browsers.

These facts indicate that the browser figures above are not 100% realistic. Other web sites have statistics showing that Internet Explorer is used by at least 80% of the users.

Sadly no, however Stats counter do and the news for Firefox in Europe isn't too bad, Linux however ain't winning yet.

What scares the bejaysus out of me is the IE6 usage.

That's a handy site. Never seen it before.

Linux really has next to no market share. Very surprised Firefox 3.0 is much more dominant than 3.5. What's holding people back there??

And yes, how the hell is IE6 usage still so high?? We were considering dropping it from our list of supported browsers a while back but from the look of them stats you really can't afford to do that!

Those stats overestimate both the FF and Linux actual market share. They are based solely on hits to pages. I'd be willing to bet that the average FF/Linux user would create far more hits than the average IE/Win one. As a percentage of traffic the stats are fine, but not as a percentage of actual users.

If it ever goes mainstream, we'll need something else to be smug about. Macs perhaps:D.
