    Hi all,

My nephew's playstation is acting up, it'll power on and a few seconds later it will just freeze and "dots" appear over the screen, after this you can't power it on, you have to plug it out, if you leave it plugged out for 5 minutes it will power on again, she rang Sony and they said that there's nothing that can be done and that it's out of warrenty.

Now, I'm wondering if there's anything that can be done to get it to work? I'd find it very useful to have a second PS3 :) I'm not adverse to taking things apart so I wouldn't have a problem if there's work that would have to be done, I don't think I would be able to get a software fix onto it because it locks up very shortly after bootup

Hey Clareman. A similar thread mentioned Consolerepairs.ie so you should give them a call and see what they can do.

Cheers Keano, I had a look at them, I'd have to ship the console up to them to have a look before anything would happen, that could end up costing as much as a new PS3

Don't do any work on the machine. Your contract is with the shopkeeper, not Sony themselves. Under the Consumers Rights you are entitled to bring the machine back to the shop and demand a new machine or a total refund. You xan quote this Act to him if he tries to fob you off. Good luck. ;)

I don't think there's any scope to go back to the shop, my sister got 1 of the original PS3s, that failed within a month, got a replacement, that lasted up until just about a year ago and that failed, they gave her another replacement, now they are saying that it's not covered but they are offering half price on a replacement in Game or something

I think it would be worth sending to them? If its gone it will only cost you the price of sending to them?

    Hi Clareman,

Have you tried going into the Safe Mode on the PS3, there is a hidden mode that allows you to do 4 things to try and get the PS3 back up and running.

I had a problem a few weeks ago that the PS3 would crash every time I exited a game, I found a thread about the safe mode an used it to fix my problem.

N.B. Just be careful in doing this because one of the options formats the hard drive so use at your peril

    ACTIVATING SAFE MODE

Step 1: Turn off the PLAYSTATION 3 by holding the Power button on the front of the unit till the Power light is red.

    Step 2:

    1. Touch and hold the Power button, you will hear the first beep, meaning the PLAYSTATION 3 is powering on.

    2. Continue to hold the Power button and after about 5 seconds, you will hear a second beep, indicating the video reset.

    3. Continue to hold the Power button and after about another 5 seconds you will hear a third beep and the system will power off (Power light is red).

    Step 3:

    1. Touch and hold the Power button, you will hear the first beep, again for the PLAYSTATION 3 to power on.

    2. Continue to hold the Power button and after about 5 seconds, you will hear a second beep for video reset.

    3. Continue to hold the Power button and after about another 5 seconds you will hear a quick double beep. At that point release the Power button. If you succeeded in activating Safe Mode, you will see a message on the screen saying, "Connect the controller using a USB cable and then press the PS button."

    4. Connect a USB cable to the controller and the PLAYSTATION 3 and press the PS button to enter Safe Mode.

    5. Then you will see the Safe Mode menu.

Step 4: We recommending performing the safe mode options in the following order until one of the options works for you. If one of the options work, do not continue onto the other options.

    1. Restore Default Settings
    2. Restore File System
    3. Rebuild Database
    4. Restore PS3 System

Hopefully that will get it back up and running, failing that consolerepairs might be the better option.

    Cheers,
    James

    Hi all,

Sorry about the unnecessary bump, but I was speaking to my sister, she's going to go ahead and bring it into Game and get a new 1 for half price, she's not happy but they have a load of games that would be useless if they don't get a new 1, thanks all
