Buying Dell in America

    Hi,

I'm off to America in January and I was hoping to order a Dell laptop from the US site and have it delivered to my hotel while I'm there. What I want to know is whether the warranty will be honoured over here when I return with it? Also, will they accept my Irish credit card for payment? Any other issues with my plan? It's just so much cheaper and they have the prettiest covers for them there! :)

    Thanks!

After import taxes and all that fuzz its not nearly profitable enough, may as well get it locally.

And i doubt they would for one accept an Irish card, and two ship to a hotel. Not 100% sure about that though.

Ok, does anyone know about the warranty?

Pretty sure I had to use my US credit card when ordering from them (needed memory and a second hard drive cage). IIRC there wasn't an option on the billing address to use an Irish card. There also used to be something about the delivery address being the billing address as well but I don't know if that is still required. Customs allowance is something like $650 at current exchange rates.

As for the warranty, this comes from Dell's US website:

The Dell International Services Program offers the security of knowing you can receive service and support when you travel with your Dell laptop outside your home country. To qualify for international service, you must purchase the Next Business Day On-site Response Service.

Also bear in mind that if you do buy in the states that the keyboard layout will be different, and you will need an adapter for the power lead.

You can avoid customs/excise/duty by transporting it back not in its original packaging, and in my experience with a Sony laptop they will honour the warranty over here.

It won't just be returning from the USA with the laptop that you will have to avoid the customs men if thats your intention but each and every time you leave the country and return here with your laptop.

Dell warranty can be transferred here. I think that the other posters have covered my other concerns, mainly customs and the ESB.

Yes, I got my current one in America so I'm used to the power thingy and the keyboard and the price I paid for was the price it cost, iykwim. I've never brought my laptop outside Ireland since so that's not an issue. Current one is Toshiba with international warranty. I saw the thing about Next Day repair but I don't see an option to select it when purchasing the laptop so I got confused.

I think the last link is probably what I'll have to do, might email them with a fake name and see what they say.

    Thanks for the replies everyone!
