Turning forty

I'm tickling round an idea for a new book hung on the daft weight of turning forty. I'm a couple of years off but already it's looming so I think it has a lot of comic value. I'm working through the cliches, ie how we rage against the perceived dying of the light: get into adventure sports; triathlons/marathons; fear of shag failure and future flabby impotence; realisation of professional averageness/failure with little hope of change; family - crabbiness at the one we have or resentment coz we haven't one or smugness coz we're avoided one; attempts to appear young that make us look ridiculous.

Anyone have anything to add? Any true life confessions or suggestions much appreciated.

Is it fiction or non-fiction? How about a role-reversal book about a modern man whose looks are fading and decides to wear emo/vampire style make-up to try and get young, gullible chicks?

I reckon non-fiction ... you can be more direct that way. As for the Emo/vamp cross dresser gullible girl seduction idea - you been following me at the weekends? Not sure that's role-reversal, sounds too familiar.

The problem with going the Non-fiction route here, Who would want to read it? It sounds like a Blogger idea. A good idea.

I remember when blogs were special. But now everybody has time and not everybody has the time to read every blog so it might get lost in the shuffle.

But I support your idea and will give you feedback once you start posting some excerps here for review. Can you do that?

Here's some cool inspiration for you: One of the most critically acclaimed BATMAN stories ever is called THE DARK KNIGHT RETURN(Based on consitently great reviews and fan reaction and sales in the last 20 years) by Frank Miller (300(Spartans),Sin city, Robocop II writer).

He came up with the idea thinking of himself as an old man and having no hero his own age to look up to.

He thought: Superman, batman and Green lantern and the flash are all young heroes and who represents me? The old guy?

Thus grew the old man batman coming out of retirement and kicking ass all over gotham. It's an awesome story.

Probably not the kind of story you want to do. But the ideas are endless.

George Carlin has a funny (and rather insightful) routine on getting old. It may inspire you/give you some ideas.

Yeah, Carlin and Miller both did amazing work. As to the whole idea of writing about Aging and the Mid-life Crisis, my take on it would be to start with the things that used to matter when I was in my teens and 20's, but that I just can't seem to muster as much passion for now.

Music leaps to mind. Music used to be one of the Big Things in my life, but I stalled out somewhere around the Starbucks grunge scene and just haven't payed that much attention since. I still like music, I still find new bands, but I just don't have the same sort of "I don't have anything else to worry about" passion that I enjoyed when I was younger.

    But that's just me.
