I've a Toyota Corona with a 1974cc Diesel 2C engine, its due a oil change would i be right in thinking that 5000Klms would be about right for a oil and filter change?? Serviced it when i 1st got it at 346Klms now its 351Klms.

    Thanks.

If you can afford to change it every 5000kms theres no harm in doing so, but I'd say you'd easily get away with twice, if not three times that interval imo.

    Ye 5000 kms is good.

I normally change oil every 5000km and filter every 2nd oil change

I change the oil in my other car a petrol 1.6 every 5K miles but it being a diesel have a notion that it maybe have to be done more often.

If anything, the diesel could be left longer than the petrol.

AFAIK older diesel engines had very short intervals due to the high sulphur content of diesel fuel at the time. Whether this means that the intervals on these engines can now safely be extended I don't know.

I do the oil on my 01 passat tdi every 8000kms and that seems to work fine

I think 5k km is overkill, i do my TDI every 5k-6k miles and would imagine a petrol engine would be ok at every 8k miles.

I'm assuming your using semi synthetic oil also, 10w 40?

Older diesels had shorter intervals alright but with modern oils and higher quality diesel the intervals have been extended.

I'd go 6.000 miles/10,000km. not gonna make a difference having ridiculously short intervals at this stage.

The official toyota oil service was every 3,000 miles.

With and oil change then an oil and filter change,So just a filter change every 6,000 miles.

So you could stick with that. If it's a taxi and is racking up the miles then you could use a good quality oil and extend the interval a little to 5,000 miles with the filter every second change also.

These engines were designed to run on 10/40 mineral oil and in those day's a diesel engine had to have it's oil changed twice as often as a petrol car because of the soot build up in the oil(thick black oil when it comes out)

I had one of these years ago and got 425,000 miles out of it before the rest of the car fell apart!!!
