Headset Sound Quality

Hello, just bought the modern warfare 2 headset and im having trouble with the quality of the sound, seems to be a lot of static and cut outs, I was expecting a better quality of sound compared to what I could hear without the headset but it seems to be basically the same, are there any ways to improve it?

Also, is there a way I can set up a party so that I can only hear and speak my mates and vice versa, I cant really be arsed talkin to a heap of randomers and I feel concious about what I say if others can hear it

In modern warfare, you can highlight the people you want to mute, press x and toggle mute on, you can do this during the intermission while waiting for game to start and it stays on while your playing with that group of players, me and my friends do it so we don't have to listen to annoying kids

As regards the sound quaility I take it that its not the official Sony headset? I had a geotek one before and it was poor, got the offical one and it works fine has a high quality option as well, although you will get drop outs etc sometimes, depends on the PSN traffic at the time.

Can you test it outside Modern Warfare? ie start a chat with one of your friends?
