When getting paid a percentage of bar's total sales is the band allowed to see a receipt from the bar cash register showing the total sales? Or how do we keep the bar owners in line and actually get the amount we deserve? Any specific wording for contracts? Thanks.

I have never heard of a band being paid like this before! It'd want to be a pretty big bar

Depending on the amount of beer sold during a gig and the percentage of the bar sales that the op's band are going to get they could actually be getting paid more than the average band.

If your being paid by percentage of the bar sales, get a contract done up before hang and make sure it gives you access to the recieps from ALL tills. Otherwise your pretty much asking to be taken for a ride!

I'd steer well clear of an arrangement like that.

Set wage...or even a set minimum wage, and a percentage of bar sales over that perhaps?

    Sounds v dodgy though...

Youd have to specify if you were getting the percentage for the whole nite or just for when the band is on.

Ah jaysus this guys gonna get slagged... Look bands don;t get paid from the bar bands get paid from what comes in on the door so say you have a 40% 60% split which is what most promoters i know do yad get about 400 euro if they brought in say 1000 on the night.

But no the bar does not pay you. Unless their hiring you out as a residency band then they might.

There is a place in the centre of Dublin that makes you pay a deposit and if the bar takes in a certain amount, you get the deposit back.

I think they allow you to have the door too so effectively if you pull a big drinking crowd, you get the venue for free and can make a decent bit from the door.

Don't think you get paid tho from the bar with this venue

Arrangments like this never favour the band. Best to get a set price and leave it at that. I understand bands starting out will think this is a great idea and I'd be pretty sure if you do not wanna to it there is a 1000 bands behind you that will.

Lastly, if i was bringing 1000 people to a show I'd be expecting another "0" on that 400 figure....

It is somewhat common in the States for this way of being paid. the obvious problem is if you're not shown a bar receipt of total sales..... and talking to musicians around here it's a red flag if they won't show you the bar sales. That said - if it's done correctly you get to charge No Cover - pack the bar and get a decent paycheck. Here in the states the bar and the door are the same people..... and places that have music 7 days a week don't charge cover on many week nights.....

but charge 3 bucks cover and get 100 people in there the total is 300 - split between the bar and the band....

get 20% of the bar sales w/ no cover and many more people will come to bar to see you play.....and the pay comes out as even more.....

it's a good way - if they show the receipts and you are a new band or from out of town.....

i've played 100's of shows in the last 3 years and have only been paid this way 2 times.... once it worked out -- once we got only 300 for a show with a few hundred people in the bar....and if you're from out of town and don't have someone to stand by the door counting the numbero f people paying cover the same problem as not being showed the receipts occurs..... oh well the history of bands is full of bands being ripped off by bar owners - get up stand up!

I believe it's not that strange an arrangement for small venues! As far as I know The Roundy in Cork offer bands the choice of (1)charging at the door and keeping all or (2)having no charge and taking a percentage of bar takings. I'm afraid one has to trust the bar on this! The band basically has to make a call as to whether they expect many at their gig and if they are drinkers!
