well i started out carving wood. if you can do that its simple enough to move to bone. the main differences are its hard to get good pieces from healthy animals, the material is not forgiving of mistakes, and it takes alot longer.

i''ve been using shin bones from cows. alot of the time its not healthy bone. only small sections are pure white. the other stuff seems to be more porous. its discolours faster.
it can take hours to get a mirror smooth finish on a piece using various grades of sand paper. but its worth it when you do, especially on bone rings.

sorry, im self taught. maybe theres something out there to advise more.

    thankyou.
it would be nice to think i was the only person in ireland working with bone but i'd like to find an artist making money out of it and ask them how they do it :D

I love wotking with bones, horns, antlers, etc. It more fun than wood carving for me. You are lucking you live in Waterford. Lots of whale bones in the beach I heard. Please feel free to ask any questions that you might have and I'll try my best to answer them. You don't have to be sorry that you are self taught. Its actually means you are a natural! I saw what you made and I see a great piece. Well done!
