rent allowance

    Need some advice on this.
My partner was laid off last year, the same week our son was born, and at the time the social said he wasnt allowed any benefit because my wages were too high.

Since then, thanks to the fecking recession, I've taken a 20% wage cut and have now been put on a three day week.
We had to move out of the house I own because we couldnt afford it, and now cannot aford the place we'v been renting.

I'm recieving benefit for the days I've been laid off and have applied to have my partner as a dependent.

What I want to know is am I entitled to rent allowance ? This would be a life saver if I'm honest, but I'm worried they might say I earn too much ( which would be a joke ), or that I'm not entitled because I own property ( which I can't afford to live in )
I'm now part-time and he is unemployed, plus we have a child.

Possibly, but owning property may make things difficult. There is however mortgage interest support available.

If you're working and own a house I find it hard to believe you're entitled to receive Rent Allowance. Also be careful if you're bf goes back to work and you receive Rent Allowance, this is technically benefit fraud if you are living together.

Why not talk to the rent allowance people and explain your situation as honest as possible. I am sure if they can't help they could point you to the right direction.

Well if my bf got a job we wouldnt need the rent allowance, we're not looking to scam the system, just need a roof over our heads.

I'm going to go in on thursday and see what they say, they seem very helpfull in my local office so might be able to advice us on something.

That is the link to the "State Benefits" forum they would be able to answer your question with a lot more detail I would guess.

Your house will be assessed as means against you thus disqualifying you.
