Jailbreaking factory unlocked iphone

    Hi guys,
I know there is loads of info online about this, but I find a lot of it confusing because it is generally not geared towards factory unlocked phones, so I am never sure what are th implications of jailbreaking vs JB & unlocking.

Basically, I am running Version 3.1 (7C144), Carrier 5.0, Modem Firmware 05.11.07... not sure if all of that/any more info is relevant, let me know if it is. I've got iTunes 9.0.2.25 on Windows Vista.

I jailbroke my phone using iTunes and software somebody posted online from quickpwn (because at the time I couldn't get it for windows, don't know if this is still the case with all the new stuff).

Basically I would like to upgrade to the newest iphone firmware and don't know if I should or what the best way to do it would be. I have read that with blackra1n you need to go through some process every time you turn the phone on, which I definatly don't want to have to do. But is this just to keep it jailbroken or is it something to do with unlocking?

My main questions are: What implications would upgrading have on my phone, and what is the best way of upgrading and keeping it unlocked/unlocking it again.

Thank you for any help in advance!

Using Blackra1n on a phone made before week 40 does not require it to be tethered back up to your P.C every time its rebooted (to re-jaibreak).
You can check the week of manufacture by the serial number on the box or by going into settings/general/about and tell me the 4th and 5th digits of the serial number.

I will then advise what to do

    Questions:
Also what sim do you want to use ?
    Are you currently jailbroken ?
Do you have lots of Cydia Apps and ;) other type Apps that you would like to keep ?

The phone isn't new at all, so I presume that it was made before week 40.... the 4th and 5th numbers are 3 and 2 respectively.

So if I use blackra1n will there be any changes in functionality worth mentioning? Also, will I have to reinstall cydia apps and things?

I am using a tmobile sim now because I'm in england, and meteor when I go home. As I said my phone is factory unlocked, so I want to be sure that jailbreaking it agian will definately not affect that in any way.

    Cheers!

Sorry, I didn't see your last questions for some reason!

Yes my phone is now jailbroken, however like I said I didn't use blackra1n or anything like that. I don't think it was out at the time. Somebody gave me some firmware made by quickpwn and i put it on my phone using itunes.

Yeah I've got cydia apps and things that I would like to keep if possible!

    Thanks again

    OK,

You will have to update your phone (officially) to firmware 3.1.2 via iTunes , BUT before you do that you will have to backup your current Apps.

    Offiical Apps:
Any official Apps you have installed wont be a problem , they will re-sync the next time via iTunes .

    Cydia Apps:
All your Cydia Apps will need to be backed up ...
    Search "aptbackup" in Cydia .
    Install it.
    Open it at press "BACKUP"
    Done.
What this does is takes a list of all your Cydia Apps (**it does not copy them) .
When you want them back (after re-jailbreak) you simply follow the above Instructions again but hit "RESTORE"
**all settings will need to be re-entered as it copies back the App not settings etc.

    Cracked Apps:
You (I) cannot talk about cracked apps here .
    ________________________________________________________________

Now that you have all your apps backed up its time to jailbreak ...

    Go to HERE
Select your operating system (Windows or Mac )
    Download to your desktop .
Plug your phone into your P.C (If iTunes opens , close it)
Double click on the "blackra1n.exe" on your desktop .
    Click "make it rain"
    Follow the instructions
    10 secs later ..your jaibroken.

On your phone you will see a "blackra1n" App .
    Open it .
Install Cydia or whatever you prefer .
You will also see "blacksnow"..You wont need this as this is the unlock feature , you said u have a factory unlocked , correct ?
Go back into Cydia and get your "aptbackup" and reinstall your Cydia Apps.

Go back HERE AND DONATE !

    Hope this Helps .

    M.

quick question on this, im thinking of getting an iPhone and jailbreaking and unlocking myself. Sorry for jacking your thread!

if i was upgrading the firmware and had to jailbreak again, does it have to be an O2 sim card in the phone at the time or is the phone still unlocked to any network?

Hey mixednuts are you sure you don't need an o2 sim. The blackra1n jailbreak does not hactivate your iphone so when the jailbreak is done it asks for sim card to activate the phone in itunes.
This is what my experience was on a few iphones. Once you activate the iphone with the 02 sim then you can change sim and run the unlock in the blackra1n.

    ??

I have a factory unlocked Iphone

Upgraded to 3.1.2, used Blackra1n to jailbeak, installed Cydia and all is well.

Didnt bother with Aptbackup as its only a list and you still have to install the apps

No, sometimes have a cache error with Cydia loading up but it reloads ok the next time.

Have downloaded themes etc of 20MB and no problems.

I did install Insomnia to ensure that when the phone went to sleep that it didnt drop wireless connection and kept downloading but rarely have to turn it on.
