    Hi all

Would anyone happen to know if we have an Irish equivalent of the US "school district"? I have to adapt a survey that was written in the States on who makes decisions re computers and IT in Irish schools.
I presume it is the Department of Education in Ireland but maybe there are more local educational bodies that would look after this? Have tried ringing Dept of Education but no joy, I guess due to the strike. And I have to have this done for tomorrow morning, eek!!

I would imagine that the closest equivalent would be a VEC, which would have responsibility for a number of schools. They control the budgets of each school in their care, the allocation of teachers to each school and are overall managers of the schools - each school has a Board of Management which is in turn a sub-committee of the parent VEC and is answerable to it.

NCTE is in charge of all things IT in schools

Local management will decide what gets bought equipment-wise.

    Is your survey about curriculum/policy/equipment/software?

According to the survey it's the person who makes the decision regarding computers and operating software.

Our (VEC) school has a contract with Dell, so we get mostly Microsoft stuff which comes bundled.

More and more teachers are ordering the PC without the bundles now (and installing open source stuff), but the OS would generally be something from Microsoft.

There isn't a policy that says we have to used Microsoft, it's just the easiest since Dell ship with it.
