hey guys, the clutch is gone in my dads Octavia(1998 1.9 TDI).
He wants me to me to order the part online and have a local mechanic fit it. Local suppliers charge €400 - €500 for the part before labour

Can anyone tell me if this is the correct kit to get?

    From construction year: 07/1997
    To construction year: 07/2000

Make sure your car falls between those dates.. In the engine bay the vin tag or chassis tag should have date on it...

    Edit: http://www.irishautoparts.ie/catalogsearch/advanced/result/?c=216&qh_models=226977

    Cheaper!!!

Cool, that is cheap. Yup I'm sure that's the year of construction from his car.

I just noticed the cheaper clutch kit is for the 1.9 SDi. This won't work with a 1.9 TDi will it?

You need the Engine code for all VAG's to get the clutch. Also, VAG use both Sachs and LUK clutches OE, but you can not use a Sachs clutch with a LUK DMF and reverse. LUK list 3 clutches for this car.

Remember if you do get the wrong clutch online, don't bother tryign to bring back to a motor factor, The lads in the trade are suffering from people buying online and are not very helpful to people who ask them to exchange parts bought online.

Thanks OldmanMondeo, I'm a bit confused. What exactly do I need to check to make sure I am getting the correct clutch kit? I can check the engine code no problem but how can I tell if the car has a Sachs or LUK DMF?

A main dealer MIGHT tell you. Otherwise you won't know until the old one comes out.

Don't think that year Octavia had a dual mass flywheel, so either Sachs or LUK should suffice. Fitted a clutch to a friends 1998 Passat with same 1.9 TDi engine, and it just had a solid flywheel. Get engine code off the timing belt cover, alternatively the sticker beow the carpet in the boot, contact VAG and ask them whether than engine has a dual mass flywheel, and you'll have your answer...:)

Once you have the engine code, check your online shop to see if it listes a DMF, proably won't. Once you don't have a DMF, you can use any clutch that is designed for the car. BUT be sure to use the Engine code....
